Drive "The Great Ocean Road" kills 2 birds with one stone, great driving experience, lots of nice scenery and places to have lunch with SHMBO :-)

you could also go to the zoo`s(melbourne and the werribee open range)
the great ocean road is cool, though it takes a while to get there from melbourne.lorne or apollo bay are nice places to stop for lunch etc. just watch out for bikes that can at times really howl on the gor. it will probably be freezing when you are here so pack some proper jackets otherwise you will regret it ie cairns much warmer than the winds coming off bass straight. cheers Dean |

Visit the casino, even if you are not a gambler. The building itself is a sight to behold the first time you visit - it's simply massive.
Plenty of restaurants in Melbourne, Lygon St in Carlton is great as is Fitzroy St in St Kilda. If you are planning on going to Geelong then a 45 minute drive will have you at places like Queenscliff for a look around - plenty of wineries around that way too if you like wine. If trains are your thing then you can go for a trip on Puffing Billy in the Dandenong Ranges. Not my cup of tea, but it's an option. Take a drive around Alert Park Lake, making sure you don't go above the 50 km/h speed limit. Spend a day wondering around the CBD. There are bucket loads of shops and alleyways to look in/at. Finally, make sure you stick to the speed limit where ever you are. Fixed camera locations are not signposted, and plenty of intersections have speed and red light combos. There are also fixed speed cameras on many of the freeways and the Hume freeway has speed cameras that measure your speed over a distance, so not only do you get a ticket if you speed past the camera, you will also get a ticket if you travel too quickly between two (or more) cameras. Apart from that, have a great time. |

Ditto Great Ocean Road.....its a big day but a great day's driving.
Non car related suggestions: The ESPY Hotel in St Kilda is a bit of a Melbourne Institution. Quintesential Melbounre pub. St Kilda itself is nice to walk around - there the beech, lots of people, lots of places to eat. Down the bay a little you could go Portsea and catch the ferry across to Queenscliff (and the GOR). There are wineries on the outskirts of Melb in just about every direction but the Mornington Peninsula has some rippers, same with Yarra Valley. Look them if can be bothered heading out that far from the CBD - 2 hours to get there! Within the city: Lygon Street - little italy Little Bourke St (i think) - China Town.....yum yum Rialto Observation deck is superb and probably not as busy as the new one....but with a similar view. Queen Vic Market - a busy vibrant market just on the north of the cbd... See the Footy at either Telstra Dome or the MCG - you usually can get tickets just by going a little early Southbank and the Crown Casino prominade are good for a walk and there is plenty of very low key places to eat....mixed with high priced places to eat as well. We also have some wonderful parks - Albert Park is quiet and peaceful and is where the GP is - the pit buildings are all permament and is a tourist must see I think (Cops regularly sit there radaring for F1 Driver wanna be's - you have been warned) Faulkner Park is nice, Fitzoy Gardens etc. I'll post other things as I think of them.... |
