Its common for worn rocker shafts to do it and it is also even more common that the purge valve does it. If it sounds more like its up passenger side front try the purge.

My EF used to make weird noises. Took ages to work out the bolts that hold the converter onto the flywheel were loose. Might be worth a look

The purge valve on my pursuit was niosy as well but it didnt bother me to much.
About a month ago was talking to a good friend with a au 3 te50 and he happen to here it ( purge noise ) he told me his was noisy when the car was under warranty , so he had the dealer fix it .
Then one day he had to pull the plastic inner gaurd of to fit some air duct to the air fillter , by suprise he saw it wraped with a rag !!!! he was fuming : , car was out of warranty.
I told him at least its not noisy.
He is still upset , i think mostly because they used a dirty rag

Purge valve on the carbon canister, also known as the Tickford Tick. Mine used to be noisy until it fell out one day when I was on the skid pan, its been quiet ever since.

found the noise, it was the purge valve which is good at least its not something major,

is there any issues with just leaving it disconnected?

If it is suspended in mid air by the connecting hoses you wont hear it; its only becomes audible if it touches the chassis or bodywork.
