Default Driving questions

Hi all,

First post so forgive me if this has been raised. : apologies if that is the case

My question is demerit point related. Does anyone know if all demerit points are lost/gained...

the 12 month provision is one option and the three month suspension is the other option.

Is there another one?

Reason I ask is I have been told not to worry I can still drive. I realise I can on the 12 month provision but I was wondering if anyone knew more.

Thanks.

As far as I'm aware mate penalties vary from state to state so your location would help. From memory the 12 moth provision gives you f@*k all points. 3 months gets you back where you started?

In Vic it works that you can keep driving but have zero points for 12 months, if you get one ticket your gone for 6 months or lose your license for 3 months and get all your points back

If you really really can't go 12 months without a car go provisional for 12 months and for god sakes sweep your instrument cluster every 3 seconds!

hehe joking not trying to be rude.... thats what I was taught anyways. Having said that the times I've managed to lose points I've been really tired, not paying attention or being a etc. It's at these times when in theory you continue to practice techniques that have been drilled in...

They actually give you 1 point...hence why its called the 'golden point'.

Also if you do get caught doing something silly during the golden point period you can lose it for more then three months. so if you get done for a 3 point penalty you lose your licence for 6months + an additional 2 months.

I have less then 3 months to go. It's tough at the start but you get use to it. But it's seriously dangerous when you need to get from one side of the road to the other where you need full concentration on the road. Looking at the speedo and trying to navigate across in traffic is very dangerous.

Well they must have changed it recently because when i was on it. Finished october last year. FC-351 had the same thing as me. It was called the zero option not the golden point. If you had one point and lost it then you would be eligible for the zero option.

It worked just as I said, either no points for 12 months and you lose your license for 6 months if you screw up, 1,2 or 3 points. Alternitively you could lose your license for 3 months and get full points back.

Your only eligible for the zero option if you lose exactly 12 points. If you lose 13 points you don't have this option

I went asking about it. The paperwork that I have says if you have incurred 12 or MORE points (I lost 12).
So I don't know, and in all honestly I really don't wanna find out.

One does not 'lose' demerit points.....

You 'gain' them!

Well I am seriously considering the 3 month option. It'll be hard, but if I am well prepared, I should be able to do it. Public transport should be okay, I just need to keep an eye on the time so I can get to places on time. It's only for 3 months, I can get fit walking to and from the train station and it forces me to leave work at a certain time. Believe me, the option of getting fit suits me, fine. I need to lose some kilos.

The added option of getting back to zero is incentive, too.

Turning a negative into a positive, here.

I will be embarrassed explaining why I am doing the public transport thing, but that is my problem that I created.
Lesson learned. No-one to blame but me.

I was waiting for someone to point this out.
You start with ZERO points .... and "acquire" demerit points as you go.

I've been clean for about 5 years ... so lucky me as no demerit points.
Surprising though with the work I do.

From notification of all 12 points, there is a 28 grace period. At the endof the 28 days, THEN the suspension or good behaviour starts.

At the end of 3 months all points wiped
At the end of 12 months all points wiped

The 12 month option leaves you with 2 points grace but if you use up those (any driving offence) you are back to all points and lic suspended for 6 months- no options.

Give the RTA a call - or if you are embarrassed check out the RTA website for more info.
I know that many years back my brother lost his licence for a undisclosed period of time for a variety of reasons. When pulled over he gave the police officer his licence, and his keys, and said that's it, I know I'm screwed, I think I'll be better off just walking home from here. As the officer stated - the demerit points are administered by the RTA, and as such it does not take effect til the RTA processes them. The RTA will be in contact with you, and let you know where you stand in due course. Alternately I believe you can ask the question of the RTA as to how many points you still have left on your licence - but iirc correctly there is a $30(?) processing fee to type your name into the database.
I am sure that the staff would be professional enough not to be ridiculing you over your 'indiscretions' and the small amount of embarrassment caused may provide you with options you were unaware of. Please post up the info if you get a definitive answer so that other members know where they stand (not that anyone would want to find themselves in such a position)

I already did that. Look above your post.

I still think I will take the three month option. Funny, I have been driving for over 18 years in NSW and in one year, gone.
