Just announced on Foxtel, the Dakar has been cancelled on the eve of the start due to security (terrorist) fears.
Ironically, in the next ad break was the advert to watch the reports on the rally starting tomorrow. Imagine the anger of the competitors who have spent a fortune preparing vehicles. I was looking forward to this years coverage. I guess the terrorists will be looking to blow something else up instead :togo:

If this is true then i am disgusted, when is this terrorism crap gonna stop. Its bad enough when Speed Week gets cancelled due to too much water on the salt and they cant use the timed part of the high speed run. If this turns out to be true i will be dumbfounded. I too call B.S. at this point in time.

that is the biggest load of crap ive heard to date.
screw the terrorists, cancel events and they win. get the army, hold the event and blow up anyone that gets in the way. its that simple. seems this world is too pussy to do anything about terrorists except for running the other way. its time to stand up and show these people what terrorism is really about. |

Last time I saw the race there was no real track just a way point that you had to get to, and HOW the heck would they lay land mines on a track that really doesn't exist. I think it has more to do with the safety of support crew and officials not the actual racers. and what is a sandmine??

Wasn’t there a death in the event a few years ago where a car ran over a land mine? I can remember one of the team got out and was trying to wave everyone else clear of it so that they wouldn’t get caught up in a minefield.

This is the link to the offical Dakar site
http://www.dakar.com/indexus.html It's great to read the last paragraph from the offical statement The Dakar is a symbol and nothing can destroy symbols. The cancellation of the 2008 edition does not endanger the future of the Dakar. To offer, for 2009 a new adventure to all the off-road rally passionate is a challenge that A.S.O. will take on in the months to come, faithful to its engagement and its passion for sports. |

That is incredibly sad, not only for us but the people who live in the countries that the race goes through. I bet most of their tourism revenue comes from the race.
