Default Thoughts on Bling (Chrome)?

Why do people go for chrome wheels?

I understand the reason for classic muscle cars, just because it suits so well, and doesnt look plastic. Besides that its a totally different style of wheel and doesnt compare to its larger variant.

For the rest of the cases of chrome wheels, what is it about them that attract people to buy them and put them on any car of choice. For example, the ford F6 outside my work thats lime green, and sitting on 20 inch chromies which look rather plastic. It doesnt look mean, expensive or stylish. Sure the person may just prefer chrome wheels in general, but enough so that it justify's putting them on a car like that?

Another example, 20 inch chromies on a VN that has now caused it to sit high enough to go four wheel driving. Obviously he/she is going to lower it back down, but as if thats going to make it look any better? The overall look trying to be achieved is....what..?

Basically i want to know what kind of look those big, ugly, shiny chrome rims are trying to represent.

We all can recognise when a driver has chosen a certain kind of rim to aid the look of their car or to create a aggressive/classy theme, when given some decent thought, most rim/car combinations look damn good.

So what look is trying to be achieved when placing large chromies on our daily driving varients of the vehicle world? I struggle to understand why they are chosen.

Most jetpilot sticker users dont actually know what brand jetpilot is associated with :P

I believe stickers are in a different catagory though, some stickers display what brand name parts are fitted in a car (cop bait btw) and thats acceptable in some cases, things like jet pilot stickers are just a phase people go through and never get around to taking them off.

My friend has a VT and had "Anger management" (bike brand) sticker on the back of it. Its gone now :P

Chosen carefully, they can look good - but often people just go overboard.

In that case, they need one of these:

Your not seeing my point. People will mod their cars as they please, but when most people do it they aim to achieve something by doing it, when we all mod our cars we want to look at it and think "daaamn that looks so(insert description here)". What are those particular chromie users thinking?

I'm not a fan of alot of chrome wheels, they look cheap IMO. There are exceptions though..

Bonspeed Clutch's and Simmons wheels look good on almost any car.
I do like black centered rims with chrome dish though...

Agreed totally.

Chrome wheels on some cars look good though. For example, a black 300C with big chromies can look awesome. But more often than not, they look terrible.

They are chosen because we want to be individuals. I dont want my car to look exactly the same as every other car. Sure you may not like my rims, too bad for you, i do. These sort of trends go in cycles. Chrome is in (or on its way out depending on your point of view). Black centred wheels with chrome lips look good i agree for black or dark coloured cars (and may be my next choice). Remember the trend of white rims on white cars? (no i didnt do it lol).

It about personal choice, not trying to achieve anything other than be different. 22" chrome wheels on large cars like a Territory, i think, look good. Almost everyone on this forum disagrees. Thats good, means no one else will have the same which was the original intention. :

No need to flame me/bag me/abuse me about my choice of rims. If you dont like them you dont have to comment.

The only thing chromies look good on IMO is 4WDs/SUVs (as above) or some luxury cars. Otherwise they just look crap and cheap.

Nah,

It is a bit horses for courses.. I love billet wheels Bonspeed, Simmons, Intro etc. but these are not chrome. They are highly polished alloys and as such have slightly different coloured shine. Less blue, subtle but you will see it if you look. However billet wheels are a to live with day to day.. I had a set of American Torque Trust II's on an old F100, Looked fab but required regular polishing (every 3 or 4 months) to keep looking good. To do this properly was a wheels off, afternoons work. :

IMO Chrome doesn't look quite as good, but is super easy to keep clean. For a daily driver, chrome is go. Like any wheel is should be sized and styled to suit the car. Bigger is not always better. FPVwannabe's TT looks hot, Pure class. If I was fussy the car needs lowering and I would have settled for 20's. But it not my car, it still looks and I bet it turns heads.

There is no excuse ever for driving a VN commodore or anything lime green.

So you wouldnt want to know my previous Territory had 20's (same wheel design) and was lowered 20mm at the front, lol.

Yes the black one needs to be lowered too, time and money is holding that up though.

Nothing wrong with crome, just as good as painted/powedercoat/ploish. Just depends on the car, its colour and the wheel design.

i think more so than chrome, the diameter of the rims has gone too far. some ba's can get away with 20's as they are a bulkier looking car but anything before 02 and definitely E series just end up looking like a roller skate with any more than 18 or maybe 19's.

when you start going 19's and above you just can't get tyre profiles low enough to keep the rolling diameter close to or the same as factory so not only does it lift the car off the ground another inch or so, it also means if you want it looking any good you have to lower it a lot more than normal which gets expensive in parts and you have a much higher risk of attracting the long arm of the law.

chrome dish FTW though.

I finally dug up a pic of my car. I think Chrome can add aggressions as well as class to a car.

For your thoughts.

Screw chrome. Alloys anyday.

There are some nice chrome wheels, but the majority look too bling.
