Is it possible to take the cig lighter socket out without taking the centre panel off? And if so how?

Just looking at it in the car it may be possible to get at it if you remove the centre console? |

Cheers mate, but if I was going to take the console out I might as well just take the panel off.

I thought you must have an aftermarket head unit which you were trying to avoid messing around with. Mine is a pita. |

just stick your thumb in the lighter, twist and pull and it comes out.

it does come out easily enough as stealthau has said, there is a lug on the bottom of it to stop it so you have to twist it until the lug and the groove line up then pull it out, it can be a bit stubborn but it will come out. Then you can access the wires behind it.
cheers

As said, just jam your thumb in the socket hard, turn it anticlock wise while pulling hard, then the metal part will slowly start to come out, once thats out wiggle and joggle till its free of the light ring, then wiggle and jiggle the light ring out. Plus the new one in, make sure it works, then put the light ring over the wires first and clip it back in then slide the metal bit back in. Very happy that it works, most stuff I do doesnt. Cost $5 but its better than having a dead phone and useless car charger in the middle of nowhere again. I think the issue is caused not by corrosion but by errosion, as a lot of the chrome inside the plug is actually gone, tried cleaning my old socket up and it still didnt work so just go for the new one mate. Daves #1 tip: BE PATIENT, I now have a multitude of little scratches around the light ring to enforce that rule. |

If the cig lighter doesnt work have you checked the fuse? Common problem with all cars is the fuse blowing form people using phone chargers etc.
