Certainly hope that the Toyota engine plant keeps making engines here in Australia. We need all the manufacturing that we can get. Also noted this: Quote:

media seems to have a thing about making sure we dont have any aussie made cars full stop.
im really getting over the bashing of aussie made products, we live in the friggen country why cant they be PROUD to have well produced cars here, keeping aussie family's employed. yes its a toyota camry but its someones family, and they do regardless of if you bleed blue blood make a great fleet car, the more aussie production/input/design the better, thats alot of people employed not just factory workers.

I call BS on Toyota's part.
It's just another play for some extra $$$ from our elected reps in Canberra and Spring Street. Worst part is, they'll get it so the state and federal governments can save face. 300 jobs will cost the taxpayer $30 million, then when the next engine is due it'll happen again, and so on and so on. As for the media being on a thing against cars being made here, I agree with them. If Australian made goods cannot compete on price with those manufactured OS, it shouldn't be up to the government to support those companies, ESPECIALLY when the cash goes OS anyway. It SHOULD be up to the government to seed and fund research on and develop industries where we will be able to be competitive against other countries after an initial grant or what have you, not be the ongoing life support system for an entire industry. I'll get flamed for that and that's fine. You'll start telling me how I don't care about x amount of people who'll lose their jobs and won't be able to put food on the table or whatever. What I'm saying is that the government should be saying to Toyota (and Ford and GM as well) that we make quality goods here and if they don't want to fork up, fine, we'll foot the bill to retrain these guys in industries that have a competitive future here. And this coming from someone who loves his Australian (and American and Euro) Fords as much as anyone else here. Rant closed. Last edited by imugli; 22-12-2009 at 10:02 PM. |

I understand the relevance of questioning the cost of Australian made products, but what is our country and our people going to do once all our manufacturing and related industries are gone to cheaper overseas places? There's only so many people that can staff a Macca's, sell houses, be a tourist guide, etc. The situation will be even worse if the climate change scenario being decided at the moment plays out against Australia's mining and energy industries. No-one here will have any money to do anything, buy anything or own anything. Got me beat what the answer is. Ed

With all the bagging we do of our local offerings, does it come as a shock more and more people turn to imports.

Goauto writes: "Toyota’s Altona facility – which includes a foundry, panel stamping plant, paint shop and assembly lines, as well as the engine plant – employs about 3500 workers and injects hundreds of million of dollars into the Australian economy via wages and component purchases."
At least they are stating the positives of local manufacturing. |

May Toyota had stayed RWD but did not do a clone of the Commodore it's Aurion sales might not be shriveling away, I hope this is a message to Ford with the Falcon.

This same process would happen every time Toyota switches to an upgraded engine or vehicle. They would have to compete for the rights to build it against all the other countries that do. I'm sure Toyota would say its been that way since the engine plant opened, why should now be any different.
Journalistic sensationilism in my eyes. I'm pretty sure its the same for Ford when it comes time to make a new vehicle, individual areas sometimes have to put in bids to make certain parts. The BA cylinder head is a good example, aluminium casting put in a bid but lost out to a Mexican foundry because they were cheaper. |
