Default aftermarket CRUISE CONTROL

hey,
The price for a genuine cruise kit is about $500 or more..
i saw a cheap cruise set up for under $200 in a magazine advert.

would you reckon it would be "safe" to put one in or would you take the plunge and cough up $500 for a genuine kit?

just after some suggestions thats all!

thanks
Rob

If the one you're talking about is a "Command Control" unit, I'd be pretty confident fitting it. I've installed about 4 of these over the years in various cars and the work exremely well. You would need to buy the extra bit which allows you to use the car's speed sensor, as the basic kit relies on magnets mounted on the propshaft and a sensor. Overall, I would recommend it.

so you reckon you would?
i was wondering how the cruise unit would work since it wouldnt be wired through the AU's ecu?

pretty easy set up i guess then?

I fitted one to my boss's car back in 1998 and it was a piece of the proverbial.

I paid under $250 for a complete kit for an AU I Forte from a wrecker.. and this included new buttons.

installed it myself (dead easy) and works great.

buy a secondhand kit ,

we supply kits with fitting instructions, i have fitted them myself takes about 30 minutes.

just remember to get the right kit for your car.

series 1 or series 2/3
auto or manual
6cyl or v8
sedan or wagon.

I got mine from FTG autosalvage... Darren was also helpful in specifying what i'd need to do to make the sedan kit work on a wagon (they didnt have a wagon kit at the time)

FTG would be the place to be. They've already given you some advice to help you out, so it would be the right thing to do to reciprocate by buying from them. Not that you should feel that you have to pay for advice - but I will be buying my Ford stuff from them.

because the on/off switch is on the indicator stalk, the whole stalk assembly gets swapped to the cruise one.
wagon's have a switch for the rear wiper so fitting a sedan stalk wasnt going to work, had to take one of the stalks out of the assembly and swap it over, and add a few wires.

But on AU wagons, the rear wipers are controlled form the wiper stalk, not the indicator stalk.

i know, but the cruise kit comes with the whole stalk and wiring assembly (both sides)
you simply slide the old one off, disconnect the wiring and put the new one on.
i had to actually pull it all apart and swap the stalks, which is a little bit trickier then just swapping the whole lot.
then i also had to add the wiring down the steering column.

Re: those Command Control units...

I have one in the ute, and it doesn't work what-so-ever. You can't turn it on, so I'm thinking that there's no power to it. I don't have a wiring diagram to have a look and see if everything connected properly too.
