lol potato chips more like, wouldn't bother with them all they do is trick the computer into thinking its cold all the time and pump more fuel but the ECU learns around it after time, what you could do is flash tune it after the headers are put on, but a tune with basic mods IMHO is not really needed. its not until you crack the I6 open and cam it is when you should tune, but its up to you. correct me if im wrong with any of this too chaps lol

Custom tune is better than a generic one pre-loaded. you beat me to it monty lol

ZOMG, Way to generalize, I wish I had the motivation to Justify this with a decent response, but I cant..

So what The Monty said..

Yea do not buy a chip off ebay. $20 for 20 rwkw or whateva they say... clearly it wont work. Iv heard someone put one in.. and it just screwed around with everything.

Your best bet is to save the money from a proper chip/tune and buy something else performance wise for the car

+1 for SCT flash tuner and custom tune. But ONLY if you are not planning on doing further mods otherwise you will need to do another custom tune. Tuning costs $$$ every time.

No worries mate, didn't offend me at all.

And in a way, you are right, the cheapo ebay "chips" are useless. But the likes of the Chiptorque chip, and other J3 chips are in fact very very good as long as you have a tuner who knows what they are doing! I've been running one for years in my stroked AU, and am yet to find a reason to change to an edit. Instead, without justification I get the "chips are crap, edits are better" comments.. Thus my comment

Sleeper: Yes, the TI chips are the goods..

SILVA: where abouts are you located? I am sure with your location we'd be able to recommend a tuning shop for you. If your planning on more mods in the distant future, then wait till its all done before a tune.. Even if its just a decent cold air intake..

Does anyone know if it's possible to have a custom tune allocated to the power/economy button on the tranny?

eg. increase in performance when taken out of economy mode.

It might be possible with the chiptorque chip.

My stocker with pacemakers and good leads, good airfram filter and iridiums is quite ok.
I would only use a tune if other mods were being done, change cam, valve springs or if you were to turbo or supercharge or even pill it to you kill it. Diff gears would be another good change and a converter to go with the cam.

Best value mods I have done were 3.9 diff gears and my new Red diamond stall converter. Both a lot better than the cam and ported head.

Id use a SCT/CAPA flashtuner anyday anything that plugs into youre ecu is rubbbish unless youre engine is a freak or you have a crystal box in youre engine bay.
believe me i know after trying differant types over the last 7 years.

As Cam said above, he has used a Chiptorque chip for years with no problems at all. It all comes down to if your tuner knows what they are doing or not.
