If you could do it all over again.....

At the time, I needed a bigger car to help my mum travel interstate a lot for medical reasons. It served the purpose for a while until she ended up buying a Toyota Kluger Grande with all the trimmings you could think of, so the AU was pretty much rendered useless in comparison. It served interstate traveling well at the time, and at the time, I couldn't afford anything better.

Fast forward 3 years, what I should have done was either:
1) Bought an xr6 turbo or FPV something
2) Sold it and bought another Subaru Liberty, VW Golf, Audi etc
3) Fitted a turbo motor to the AU instead of s/c
4) Got out of the rat race and bought a 4x4 or turbo 4cyl.

I keep saying 'at the time' because at the time, it was a good idea and it did the job it was supposed to. The AU did the job well, and I liked the thought of modding the AU and doing something different. Not so much now. My personal interests have changed, my drive to go faster has lessened, if anything, I would prefer better handling, better fuel economy and more luxuries over speed.

What will I do with the modded AU now you say? Well the choices are:
1) Keep it in the garage and bring it out on occasions and still buy another car.
2) Part out all the good bits and sell the AU as n/a to minimize less loss
3) Sell it as is for a substantial loss and never mod again
4) Keep modding it

I'd like Option 1 but the mrs is making me lean toward option 2.

Should have waited about 6 months for the prices of a 6 speed BF XR8, or even a BA GT to drop into my price range.

Although I love everything about my car now, those cars would make me even happier.

There are plenty of past cars I would not have bought if I could do it again, but the current BF XR8 ute, I've owned it now for over a year and am quite happy with it. At times I wish I had a sedan, but never wish I didn't have the ute.

1st car was an XF ute that my dad used for a work car...decided i wanted to buy it as it was in good nick, although always wanted a panelvan.
got it all nice for me...had it 3 months...found an XG panelvan...sold the ute and made a profit (much to my old mans annoyance) and never had anything but problems with the van. should never have sold the ute, and i believe Karma kicked me for making a profit on the ute.

i loved the panelvan because it had personality and good memories , but too many running problems and just had to sell it. now i own a BA mk2 white e-gas wagon. No personality and just a car (i hope its not listening) but so reliable and easy to drive.

Yep, in fact I am more impressed with the Rukus everyday. I was quite reserved about getting it, but love every part of the boxy bugger.

Considering I rarely drive it, I'd have to say I regret buying it.
I've had heaps of new Fords, this is the first I haven't enjoyed.
Partly because of ongoing teething problems (again), including rust (again).
I expect this will be my last new Ford especially without an LTD or big wagon on offer.

I don't really regret any of my car purchases. However, since we are playing hypotheticals here, there are two things. I should not have pulled my XB coupe apart, I should have left it as is. I would have got more enjoyment that way. Two, I should have haggled the price on the Corvette down at least 5K due to some previous owner butchery.

i love my old au s2 xr6, it`s been the best/most reliable car i`ve ever owned with out any doubts, ,still enjoy driving it ,it`s a fantastic tow car and the bloody thing just keeps going, that being said , before i bought it i was thinking i better start being practical , i`m becoming an old fart now i`ll get a 6 cylinder, big mistake , i miss those other 2 pots , even though the go difference is`nt massive, i miss the sound of the v8 and the feeling of the extra mass on the front wheels, so if i could turn back the clock ............yes i would of got the v8.

I somewhat agree, i had 2 AU's and i loved them to bits, never had and major problems with either of em.
If i knew what i know now, i probably would have bought a Euro 3-4 years ago rather then 12 mths ago.
Buying my XR5 over again id have looked around for leather and sunroof, as these are the only gripes i have.

The only thing i would have changed back in 2005 would be to have waited for the BF with the 6spd auto instead of my BA with the 4spd...

But then again they have only been able to adjust/tune them for a month now ?

I think considering the budget I was limited to when I bought the AU, I'd have still bought it!
I did consider spending the 4 grand on getting the old Volvo 360GLT restored, but considering the mileage I do now getting to work and back to pretty much would have killed the poor old thing stone dead
The other option would have been finding an AU V8, but for that kind of money even getting an early AU Six in decent nick was hard enough!

No - ended up with a 6 cyl ESP XD about a year later for $12,000. How much would that Bathurst Cobra be worth now

Assuming I could go back but keep the experience of owning my BA and hindsight on my life situation now I wouldnt have bought it. Nothing wrong with the car though, I've had it for 5 years so it cant be that bad lol.

At the time I was going to downsize to a small car but didnt see it through so I would do that. Plus my budget was low to mid teens at the time I bought my BA for twice that, so it was a stupid financial decision. I'd have a house deposit by now if I hadn't bought it.

Few regrets, mainly because I was young and stupid:

Wish I insured my Gunmetal grey TE cortina that i spent ALL my money on while at uni and then it got stolen and absolutely gutted, couldn't even salvage a door. I miss that thing.

Wish I didnt give my bargain (and mint) TC XLE 4.1 and toploader to a mate as a loan because he didnt have a car to go to work in and I was going overseas, he let it run out of rego and left it on the street until the council took it. Who knows where it is, but I also miss it.

Wish I didnt sell my brand new Blood orange XR6T that was FULLY optioned for peanuts because I got in money trouble. Although that one was a must and ended up getting a house out of it so it could be worse but I still love that car and really miss it.

Wouldn't change a thing about my ESP, XE ute and the BFII, I would buy them all over again.

Starting to question my decision about buying the AUIII Fairmont Wagon, but maybe I'm being a bit harsh on the girl as the things going wrong are wear and tear items (not all though) and it was a bargain for what it is, still is looking at carsales.

I would not have bought my car because I would have saved a lot of money towards a house and I'd say at least $30k+

I've enjoyed my car but in the end I've done nothing I wanted to do with it (mod,track) and I only drive to work really (peak hour, CBD arrgh).

Rarely gets driven on weekends aswell so it is a lot money for a car I barely can use to it's full potential. I'd say having my own place would make more happy now than a car

I love my current car, but if i knew the nightmare it has caused then i would of bought the same sorta thing, just a different ute at a different dealer.
