Default au2 transmission service advice needed.

hi guys, its been a while since I mucked around with c4 c6 and fmx transmissions,,firstly what sort of trans do I have,BTR 4speed or something?i have an au2 4.0 id like to give it a minor service,,is there things I can do other than an oil change? is there a filter,is there bands to be tensioned like the old autos,im thinking not......its not ready for major service yet but if I can tweak it a little to get some yrs out of it ill be happy..

ps im guessing you need special equipment to flush a trans also?

oh yeah and can I run dx3 Valvoline oil in it..i have new spare stuff..doing my head in looking for info,i remember using TQF and or TQF95 yrs ago,any info would help....

Hi Mate. The 6 cyl AUs where fitted with a BTR 95LE. As far as I am aware, the only serviceable components are change of oil and filter.

You are on the track with the Castrol TQ95, but there are many other trans fluids that meet the same specifications. I recently used Nulon as it specified the BTR on the label.

I am sure that there are some others with ideas as well.

Cheers
Stu

The AU 6 Cylinders were Fitted with the BTR 93LE,
TQ95 is the Fluid recommend by most transmission shops,
I have used it and also Gulf Western 95LE Fluid with no issues.

beware of some Parts shops trying to sell you Valvoline MaxLife ATF, I have been warned against this from my trans guy as it is a DEXIII Blend and does not meet all the criteria for a 95LE Replacement.

Adjustments can be made to the BTR, but the valve body will need to be removed and air applied to different chambers so you can measure the end play in the bands.

I have a PDF Document which shows how to complete these adjustments, If you feel confident I can upload it for you.

Usually just a Fluid Flush and New filter will have them operating like new (As long as there is no major issues with the box, e.g. shuddering)

Please also be aware that the transmissions have a Magnet in the Pan, this WILL be covered in metal material from the transmission, this is normal, but once again it depends if the transmission is acting correctly or not.

You can also cut open the filter and look for any Brass Shavings, if you have any, I would look at your radiator as it is common for the cooling loop to fail and introduce brass into the oil which will lead to severe damage to the box.

Becareful regarding the wiring in the transmission, as the cables can become brittle and break, a lot of issues have been caused in the past for breaking the cables within the sheath. Very painful to track down as well!

a proper service entails checking and adjustment of the bands for maximum transmission life you are better off getting a transmission specialist to do a proper service the BTR can last a lot longer than most people think with proper maintenance

Not hard to service did my AU Fairlane series 1 a couple of weeks ago
Hardest part was using an easy out to remove the filler plug
$27 for a new plug and rubber o ring from Ford
I used Penrite synthetic oil
