Advice on selling a car interstate?

I'm in Victoria and have a buyer for one of my cars coming over from WA to collect it and drive it back.

The car will be sold registered and with a valid RWC in order for him to be able to do so.

As it is the seller's responsibility to transfer the registration once sold, what other protection from potential problems other than a signed receipt should I aim for?

You need to present your half of the signed transfer slip to your motor reg asap after its signed. This will have the purchasers name, address and license number. This will show you no longer have possession of the vehicle if any infringements occur on the way to WA.
That's it.

Fill out the transfer of registration form from Vicroads & have it signed by you & the buyer, once done hand in your copy to vicroads as this will stop any fines by the new owner passing onto you from the sales date & Vic roads will take up any new matters with the new owner.
The car then will be the owners responsibility

So I actually print out the form twice, complete it twice and I give one copy to Vicroards myself?

In sa the back of the form has a tear off section, one for the previous owner and one for the purchaser. The previous owners section becomes the "disposal notice", you have 14 days in which to notify the motor reg that you have sold the vehicle. In this instance I would notify ASAP just for piece of mind that the purchaser is never seen again and starts racking up parking fines.

Thats exactly what I expected to see on the form and why I'm so confused, it doesnt look like the seller hands anything in to Vicroads now..

Make sure you also keep a record of his details for yourself in case things go pear shaped

Go to your nearest Vicroads & show them your copy, they will take down the details to be recorded then you are well & truly covered from any future fines.

Or you could just cancel the rego and let him drive it away on a temporary permit. Then you don't need to rely on him returning the plates. That's what I did when I picked up my Fairlane. I drove back to SA from Melbourne with no plates on the car, just a permit stuck on the front windscreen, no problem. Called the insurance company and had the car covered for the trip before I drove off and it was all good.

As some who has bought a car somewhat interstate (bought from ACT to NSW). I didn't need to do anything in ACT at all. Th previous owner filled out the notice of disposal (on the back of his rego form i think). I signed it. He filled out 2 sales forms (from NRMA) both of us signed it. I kept a copy and he kept one.

I came back to Sydney, did a blueslip and got a CTP from an NRMA brach (need a physical copy). Went to the local RTA and showed the them CTP, blue slip and sale form showing I'm the new owner. Car was then rego'd in my name.


Once you have the notice of disposal filled in, you can just take it to your local transport authority to update the records. Until the rego is cancelled, the car is still registered in your name, but, financially owned by the new party.
The new owner wouldn't need to do anything until he gets back to WA.

I had a look at the Vicroads website an couldn't find what I wanted.

I thought that to transfer ownership of a Victorian registered car, the buyer had to have a Victorian residential address. Stamp duty is payable on the value transferred in Victoria. You then transfer registration to your home state when you arrive. No stamp duty.

If you are selling to an interstate owner, aren't you better to cancel the rego and sell it unregistered. The purchaser registers it and pays stamp duty where he lives (and Victorian stamp duty is more expensive too).

I would have thought the Vicroads website would make this info easy to find.

I don't know if this helps the OP but I bought my ute from NSW and I live in VIC. Was unsure of what to do but basically the seller had the paper work for his state ready which as far as I am aware is a notice of disposal, we both signed it I got the buyers part and he sent the notice of disposal to the RTA and off I went with NSW plates back to vic. Then all I had to do was call the RTA cancel the rego and get a refund then rego in VIC.

You should cash in your Vic rego the moment he hands over the $$$. Let him drive home with a permit in his name.
And save $160 getting a RWC which is no use to the new owner in WA.

Oh and in Vic it's the buyers responsibility to do the transfer. Not the sellers.

Only possible if you do away with State governments, as this will not happen it will remain complicated.

Agree with this. don't make the mistake of taking the buyers word "i'll send the plates back in the mail line", they will cash it in themselves. Remove plates, get permit and receive refund in the mail in 2 weeks!. No RWC required.

I went with a mate to pick up a Torana from Glen Waverly in Vic, The owner left it registered without a roadworthy as in 5hrs we would be across the boarder anyway and took a copy of
1. my mates NSW Drivers Licence
2. Signed copy of notice of disposal
3. Had a signed copy of receipt of payment

When we arrived back in Sydney it took a couple of days to organise a blue slip and once that was done, unscrewed the number plates and send them back to the old owner express post..

He said we had a week before he would cancel the rego, We were grateful and he was helpful. As long as you have the receipts of sale and copy of his licence what does it matter.

I bought a XD from the ACT and when i got the NSW blueslip, i just handed the plates back to the NSW RTA (RMS) as it ran out of rego.

P.s The permit system seems easier than a new rego and roadworth, just make sure you give him all the documentation.

How could he have cancelled the rego?

You had the plates and car and were the legal owners
