I drive East Link almost every day for work and the last couple of Saturdays were nuts at the BP. One day there were cars parked on the verge leaving the BP with guys sitting on the roof of a car in camping chairs sucking down cans and watching the freeway...

Coming back the other way the emergency lane and the far left lane were both blocked with traffic trying to enter the BP.

Last weekend it was that bad again, but earlier in the evening, when I came back past later the coppers had blocked the entrance and were flagging cars on.

I think it was the knobs and the sightseers that killed the event, not the car enthusiasts.

The outlay would be enormous and where's the return?
A few coffees and a bit of food?

The event was bound to be shut down, sounds like enormous safety issues due to traffic banking up, especially at.night, on freeway ramps etc. Like bees to the honeypot

Not on club rego? Are you serious?
Mine are on club rego but toy do realise a lot of car enthusiasts WITH applicable cars have them on full rego? Some want to drive more often, some don't want to do the club stuff and just want a car. + club rego isn't just for cool cars I've seen a ford maxi van with a vacuume cleaner type paint job whit club plates

Sorry mate you ideas floored

That may well be true but the story i heard was the truck drivers were annoyed with the cars taking up truck parking spots and the trucks not being able to fit.

Either way we need another venue.

Agreed.

I have my cars on full rego so I can make the decision on when and where I drive them.

Lots of people slagging off the appearance of 'plastic bumper' cars.

The thing that made SNL so great was the variety of cars. Aus muscle, US muscle, JDM stuff, Euro stuff, V8's, Turbo's, rotaries etc etc.

The snob factor of 'chrome bumpers only' really is detrimental to the overall car scene and just seems so narrow minded.

Sure everyone has their preference but surely everyone can appreciate something a little different?

A massive shame to see the event cancelled but it was getting out of hand.

Would love a forward thinking council to take this on and organise it. Get some food trucks in etc.

Agreed with above, the variety of cars always makes it more interesting for all, everyone has their preferences but to go to the one spot and see a bit of everything made it even more worthwhile. I'm not an old codger so I'm hugely into the chrome bumper stuff but I always admire and appreciate it. The simple fact is the event was too good to be true. It was only a matter of time before it outgrew it surrounds. I went on the second last week and left early it was absolutely nuts the amount of cars rolling in. I don't think it should be expected that spectators or people without chrome bumper be excluded. Everyone and anyone has a right to be there whether they bring a classic or chrome bumper or not. I happily parked up in my late model plastic GT and enjoyed conversation with like minded enthusiasts, both young old and anywhere in between about our mutual loves for our cars no matter what shape or form they took and isn't that what it's all about. Sad it's gone, doubtful anything this good will pop up again soon but fingers crossed as the car scene in Melb is obviously very strong and healthy

Something for everyone, thats why I don't go to the Hanging Rock car show anymore, they limited it to pre 1985 vehicles only, they get a good 5000-7500 cars on show but 5000 of them are 1960s Mustangs.

What a shame when an event falls victim to its own success...
I can see the same happening to cars and coffee (perth) the pre christmas meet was epic.

For me these are the events I attend and truly enjoy. Theres a good variety of cars new and old, its casual and you're free to come and go as you please.

My cars are all on full rego, clubs have no appeal, you're just going out with a group of largely the same cars. 'Proper' static car shows have a different vibe, draw too many aficionado's or general admission experts, and you're stuck there all day listening to them.

I've tried the steel bumper scene but after a spirited discussion over the eligibility of my RS Escort I won't be back. It has a plastic front but the back bumper is steel and the title is 'steel bumper' not 'bumpers' lol. Anyway each to there own.

Hopefully SNL finds a new home/ venue and doesn't become a political and exclusionist minefield

It's an event that will be missed, they way I understand it, a lot of people went to Penlink (who also runs Eastlink BP). I didn't go there.
Police were at Eastlink BP keeping cars moving.

I dont care what anyone says but nice bit of propaganda by the Knox Police with some choice words.

Just watched the main honcho on YouTube be interviewed about this and he ain't happy with the course of action the Knox Police took.

No I don't think it is. My car that I use is not on club rego but is applicable for it. I meant cars over a specific age limit, I wasn't trying to imply that a 1971 car with standard registration would be excluded..

There is no other way this event will work and it's a shame because I loved it. The best night I ever had there is when it randomly started raining when I was heading there. There were maybe 20 other cars there if that and it was the best night I've had. Admittedly I made friends easy rocking up in the rain with drag radials, no wipers and a locked diff.

What a load of ****. Some of the most interesting cars down there are late-model stuff. If you want to hang out with people with the same car as you then join a club for that kind of car. The best thing about this event is the variety.

I love that there's everything from Ford/Chev pickups, new and old Aussie muscle, American muscle, Harleys and Japanese sportsbikes to Lamborghinis and Audi R8s down there. I love cars and anything with an engine in it usually has some cool aspect about it - even if it's just sharing the passion the owners have for their wheels and learning something I don't know.

Don't get me wrong, I'll hang around all day and look at XWs, XYs, 66/67 Stangs, HK Monaros, Chargers, 57 Chevs, F-Trucks/Broncos and Camaros. It's great to see the different routes people have gone whether it's to try and keep it stock as a rock or go nuts and cover it with chrome and big blower out the bonnet. It's great that this event got all these cars out of the shed every Saturday night in a chilled and family-friendly environment.

A bunch of us has have been down with FGX XR8s, Sprints and XR6Ts and had an absolute heap of people stop to chat and ask about them including guys with HSVs chatting about their cars without the usual Blue v Red nonsense or this elitist 'it has to be on club plates' crap.

I hope if it reincarnates somewhere else it stays exactly like it was cause it was the best regular car event I've ever been to without any elitist ******* or people trying to exclude others cause its not their preference. If not, I'm glad I got to go for a couple years and enjoy it while it lasted.

One of the best events here in Sydney is the Sunday coffe meet organised by Craig one of the guys on this page (can't think of his name here sorry) it's a come one come all even, none of this namby pamby built before X year or must be ford or Holden, you can turn up in a restored model T, a street rod a muscle car or a late model FG6 and every one is welcome, there's no ****ing contest no arguments about rotors hot 4's mini trucks what ever, it's just a great event that regularly attracts 300+ cars and has for a few years now.

It's held in the car park of the leagues club between a Macca's and a Krispy Kreme and it works due to the self policed no dick head policy

**** the chrome bumper only or the club plate only thing (how happy would you be with a JB Camira on HPlates that fits your ideal have it all it works well

Morning coffee events are great. Informal, relaxed, no alcohol and usually less moron factor as they aren't awake that early. There was an attempt here by the Mustang club to start one for all makes at a local park, but didn't seem to hold interest for long.

I've been trying to get down the the Fuel Magazine Coffee and Classic event when they are on in South Melb .. Eric Banner was there one event with The Beast but usually a lot of different stuff there.

My vintage motorbike club have a reoccurring Sunday morning meet which I find is the best event to attend .. just wish the car guys could get onboard here too.

It is so sad to hear of the plight of the SNL event at BP easlink.
The variety was amazing, the people are all great and well mannered, it just greatly outgrew the location.

I created this video of the event from a few weeks ago which I thought you may enjoy.
Hope you like it!
