now, I do believe its illegal to sell a defected vehicle, well, I bought one. The person I bought it off also bought it defected. As far as I know, rego is still in the previous owners name (she had it transfered into her name while the car was defected)
anyway, I'm wondering if its possible to register this car from scratch? (the same as you would with an imported car from Japan) thanks for any help. |

If it's been defected, i'm guessing you would have to go thru the normal stuff. Such as getting the defection removed and a roadie.

If you go through a full roadworthy? The defect is null and void. A defect is also null and void once the rego is cancelled. Been there done that but only in Vic.
You won't get a r/w if the vehicle has anything defective about it.

I was told I wouldn't be able to re register it, because it was sold with the defect, and therefore should have been sold as a wreck...
I'm guessing the previous owner cancelled the rego, but I still have the plates, and it was last registered in her name... hmm |

was there a notice of disposal/acquisition with the purchase ??
always get one whether it is registered or not as that keep the paper trail alive if not, then you don't own the "car" , but own all the parts of it ring the Road Dept of your state and just ask them about what to do, I reckon the defect would have to be cleared to have valid paperwork (with or without registration), but Dept may show heart and just accept a new RWC were there any unpaid fines with the defect notice ?? cause if there are your story ends hope it works out for the best |

garbage,
if car is now unregistered then you need to make sure its all in good condition then get your RWC and go and register it. Q/what happens if a defect is not fixed.A/ the rego is cancelled. then the defect is null and void, as car is unregistered so cant be driven in its unsafe condition ,untill new RWC and rego,

You only need to clear a defect notice if you intend to use the current rego left on the car.

Most of the replies in this thread have been Victorian biased, so I'm going to assume that you are based there. Now my idea is simple:
RING VICROADS 13 11 71

gotta take it through regency park
make sure defect is fixed though and that nothing else is defectable or you gotta go through again. or depending on age of vehicle buy a cheap $200 up matching car out of the trader and swap all plates over and simply re register it as that car... youd be surprised at how many cars are "fixed" like that here in adelaide I DO NOT ENDORSE THE ABOVE!!

I have a rebirth car in the back yard purchased from the auctions after the police had cleared the car. I 'am trying to find out if it can be registead from vic roads but I think some people that work in Vic roads have not got a clue. One person I spoke to said it can with a vic police vin no & another said the car has no history but the engine no is Ok but cannot be rego'd. Oh well it might be a wrecker for parts. |

it needs a second muffler put in, air intake restored to original, radiator support fixed up so the bonnet shuts, a legal gear knob, and I believe thats about it. has already had the wheels replaced, which it was defected for aswell. |

In S.A. the car has to be registered to transfer ownership. If you don't transfer it within 14 days it's a small fine.
Also does the defect require you to have it cleared at a Police Station or Regency Park? If it is a Police Station defect don't sweat it too much, they normally just check what was on the notice and it's about $20. Regency Park how ever will check everything and spend around 30 minutes going over your car. If it is a major defect requiring you to go through Regency consider how much you want the car on the road. If you need to get it some where to have the defect cleared you can get a permit from the RTA.

I will need to contact her about it. I don't NEED the car registered, as its going to be an SPL vehicle, and I can always take it to competitions on a trailer, but I thought it might be fun to drive it around sometimes, as it looks fun to drive |

dont need to worry about the rego papers as all you would need is the form to register an unregistered vehicle, but you still gotta get the defect off....
