Interesting development, 30% claimed economy increase, diesel-like compression, will run on petrol, and not use spark plugs.
Some time ago I read an article detailing how an engine would be best developed purely for ethanol, this comes close on the compression at least. Interesting Mentions a couple of things other companies struggled with pre ignition and lack of revs.
I'm thinking they will use a high pressure fuel system like the do on Common rail Diesels to solve the pre ignition lack of revs might be a bonus for emissions, no mention of power figures But I would expect more torque than diesels..

No mention of how 18:1 compression would work with say 98octane fuel.

Ethanol or methanol seems to work well with high comp
Is it leading to high juice fuels like that? It will smell like a speedway soon There is a petrol model plane engine that runs on glow plug and that seems good , and throttles OK Its getting blurred

We used to run a high compression 366 Chev race engine on diesel, just because we could.

I find this an interesting creation. I'm guessing it's direct injection as it to me appears to manage to time the detonation via injector timing not valve timing. I'm interested in the start up procedure because unless there is a glow plug of sorts, wouldn't the cold motor detract from the heat of the compression?

mmm glow plugs & Petrol, would that make a big bang?.
It may need to use decompressed cylinders with spark plugs to start

Maybe variable valve lift is used to help regulate air in the combustion chamber, but I don't know. It's probably got a rediculous amount of systems to make it function.

I read it is HCCI at low revs then the spark plug kicks in after a certain RPM.
Also won't low octane fuel mean the CR won't need to be as high? or do i have that mixed up? Also read in Wheels recently now that the downsizing trend is over (now more about rightsizing) they are working on a naturally-aspirated V6- probably with this tech. God I hope so, seems like this and Koenigsegg's Freevalve could be the final salvo of naturally aspirated big engines. |

So when is a diesel not a diesel?
Remember that despite common usage, diesel refers to the engine, not the fuel. I remember when some servo chains used to label it (correctly) as "Distillate" but that just seemed to confuse people. |
