Default When to sell car

Hi

How do people know when to stop putting money into a old car and save for another one when they'd like some money for other areas as well as car but their cars costin them a lot currently in repairs how do they fix it when they don't want to let their old car go,

Currently needs a steering rack at some point and a au engine swap then aircon then should be good trying to get most if not all done soon as possible as family don't know how much work particular car really needs and if they found out they'd talk you into selling up when you aren't intrested just wondered that's all

How else do people know to start planning for another car when they done over 200,000km even if there's nothing wrong with them currently what makes people do it

Gentlemen

While you are all having a go at him for posting the same question again, you all seem to feel the need to respond to him again.

If you have nothing constructive to add then move on - there are plenty of other threads you can read.

Some people would stop putting money into a car when it becomes uneconomic to repair... This could mean that repairing a worn out or broken part costs more than the value of the car, or that there are lots of smaller faults or problems with the car which when added up cost more than the value of the car or of a replacement car.

If you do not want to let it go you either have to bite the bullet and get the problems fixed as they occur or need addressing, things like steering racks and air-con can cost a fair bit especially if you have to have all the work done by a mechanic. Even if you have these done there's no guarantee that something else wont happen in another month or two, so sometimes it is best to sell it, which is what it sounds like your family would suggest.

If you really are attached to this car then you need to decide how to keep it. some options for you doing this are:
-try and cut down in spending money in other areas if possible
-try and learn to do some of the work yourself
-shop around for a good deal to get the work done if possible where you live
-park the car up and replace it with a more reliable car until you have the means to fix your cars issues.

There are lots of reasons people plan for other cars, including changes to family situations, work, location and leisure. But it sounds like you do not want another car and want to try and keep your car and fix it up, so unless you get a cheap runabout as a secondary car until you fix yours, then its probably not worth worrying about.

Hope that helps you sort out this reoccurring dilemma and make a decision on what you can do about your car.

I look at replacing my daily driver fords at around 200,000 kays as I have found thats when things start wearing out and falcons by that age arent worth much so repairs can out way the cost of vehicle or reliability can start to be an issue. Of course that's my theory and it may not work for others. Note this doesn't apply to classic cars.

You should let the car go if the repairs required are greater than the value of the car, unless it's a collector car.
