Default Black and White Vinyl Tiles on Garage Floor

One of the guys on these forums had some pics of his cars in his garage, and the floor was black and white chequered. He said he'd used vinyl tiles.

For the life of me, I can't remember who it was and what thread it was in (I'm pretty sure it wasn't in the Show Us Your Shed). I've also tried the search function without success.

Anyone able to point me in the right direction? Wanted to get some tips.

Cheers

Have you already got the product and want tips on how to lay?

Bunnings sells a large sheet of lino:

That would have been Agony's purple '32 hotrod. I think he's deleted his thread and moved on... but I found this.

Thanks, YF. No, don't have the product yet. IIRC the person had used the individual tiles but had not actually stuck them down. I wanted to talk to them about how effective that was doing it that way, and whether they noticed any movement. Also wanted to get an idea as to how often the tiles were driven on in that configuration.

The advantages being that it would be very easy to replace a tile if it got damaged, but I don't want them moving around much either.

Thanks CS. Thats not the thread I had in mind as I've never seen that car before (very nice by the way). That is the exact look I'm after though. Have just bought myself a new house and would like to upgrade the garage!

I have a feeling it may have been member Pridenjoy. I'll send him a pm and ask.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I think it could be quite tiring for your eyes.

Anti-slip coatings are less glamorous but probably more suited to a ”light workshop duties” garage floor. I’ve seen one in a mate’s shop that is incredibly durable. Steam or jet wash brings it up as new, less a very few heavy mechanical impact points.

Many moons ago we did my brother's laundry with Lino tiles. They were very thick, and with Lino the colour goes all the war through. I thinkwe did it without glue because I remember much pounding with a rubber mallet. Again the advantage of lino is that it's "squishable" enough to expand into crack and gaps and forms a good seal and so is less prone to lifting. I have also used the self adhesive PVC tiles. My recollection is they were much thinner, and I don't know how well they would have worked if not stuck down. My gut feel is that there would have been a lot of lifted edges.

The other point, with the self-adhesive tiles, is that I don't imagine they would have been particularly difficult to replace. Especially if stuck to bare concrete

Any individual tile will move when not glued down. A simple turning of the steering wheel will cause the tiles to move against each other and possibly ride up on the tiles next to them.
Personally, I’d go with the vinyl sheet glued down. It’s easy to cut a square out and re glue it if one or two get damaged. The added bonus of laying vinyl is there’s no gaps for water to under it.

Check out Flexico walls and floors on either Facebook or their website, it popped up the other day and although sounds expensive is exactly what you are looking for

Don't know much about this but these look kinda cool. There is also a designer on the website where you can put in your dimensions and make your design that you want etc then just hit the checkout button and it gives you the price.

The sheets are from Cheap as Chips and Cost me around $450.00 to do the entire 5.5x9m shed as seen. A few have lifted but were very easily replaced. Very good clean of the shed prior, try to fill in any gaps in the concrete the best you can, then a gentle warm up of the vinyl and stick them down. After measuring the correct angle to get a perfect right angle of coarse! Mine dont generally get too wet but oils etc wipe off very easily. They are not affected by petrol or brake fluid yet and i have had them down for several years now. Only issue i have with them is when jacking up a car, it marks the tiles so i have had to use another mat over the top when jacking the cars up for services etc. Hope that helps.

Those other ones from ebay and other sites IMO dont look that great as they are textured, and are very thick, plus are very costly. I would either do a DIY kit of epoxy or the vinyl tiles like iv done. Depends on how you use the garage also.

For future serviceability, i know that in comercial purposes with carpet tiles the 'glue' they use is more like an abrasive. It gets tacky, but never fully sets. Making it easy to change worn carpet tiles yet the things dont move around. So you can pull them up, lay them back down and there is no repercussions. So a pretty good meduim as it makes for a good floor covering that doesnt move around, and is easily replaceable.
