Angry Ford Mustang Dark Horse Stolen from Melbourne Docks

“Like a scene from the film Gone in 60 Seconds, a rare high-performance Ford Mustang Dark Horse has been stolen from the docks in Melbourne after arriving on a ship from the US.

A 2025 Ford Mustang Dark Horse has been stolen from Melbourne's docks, with thieves taking off in the limited-edition muscle car before the owner took delivery.

It's believed the Mustang Dark Horse was taken from the Port of Melbourne – or the surrounding area – after arriving on a ship from the US, roughly two years after the buyer placed their order for the limited-edition model with Ford.

"We can confirm that a Mustang was stolen while in transit to a dealer," a spokesperson for Ford Australia told Drive in a written statement.

The Ford Australia spokesperson said the incident has been reported to police.”

They must have known it was there ? Inside job ?

100% inside job, it's like how tools and cables keep getting stolen from those big construction sites in Melbourne CBD, when they have security.

Those data centres they're building, they do a 240mm2 mains run and they conveniently keep getting stolen over night, it's happened like six times on the one site.

There was ~40 cars stolen from there the other week.
They just rammed through the concrete barrier with a sacrificial vehicle, then drove all the rest out the gap over a period of a few hours.
Keys are left in the vehicles.

Publicity job, surely? It gets everyone talking about the Mustang range.

I was thinking about this , doesn’t the Melbourne Docks have security cameras and gates ?
I wouldn’t want to be the Ford person telling the owner his car has been stolen !

I found this story so unbelievable I had to look it up.

So they were stolen from a storage facility. Goes to show, sometime looking obvious pays off for the criminals.

Being a limited edition, no doubt it will be shipped back overseas.

You'd be surprised, you chuck on a hi-vis shirt and no one asks any questions, yesterday was parked in a no standing zone, put the little rotating beacon on the car, and was hanging around the street with my knife doing some work and the only person who was suspicious and asked us what we were doing was some junkie on a pushbike singing to himself, everyone else assumed correctly we were there fixing something

Also, I've rocked up on site to take earthmoving equipment and no one even second guesses, I've only ever had security confront us once or twice and its always when we've turned up to job sites 5-6+ hours after everyone's knocked off for the day, when you rock in 11PM onwards they get a bit suspicious.

If you rocked up on site during the day in high-vis clothes you could just take stuff no issues.

Yep, stick hi viz on and you're right. Place in $ydney asked if I was there to pick up all the sandstone blocks in a park just because I stopped off in the truck to eat my lunch there. Wasn't quick enough to say oh yeah.

Riding a bicycle is similar, you often get into places you wouldn't think possible.
We once rode down into the Capital Hill car park under Parliament House Canberra, no one challenged us, rode around and checked out all the pollies cars.
Riding back out, the security gave us a friendly wave.

I think that Mustang probably wasn't stolen from the actual port area under the control of customs but from the nearby holding yards.

Was in a cafe earlier this week after work and shopping center management on the table next to me started asking questions about when we're starting with the crane crew tonight working on the shopping center.

I wasn't aware there was a crane crew, however now I am somewhat interested, let me know when I start tonight

Would be really easy to do similar, here at the holding yards at Outer Harbour S.A.

Few years ago a D9 went missing after someone turned up at a mine site with an appropriately sized float and a couple of pilot vehicles.... nobody noticed for several weeks, and by then all the security camera footage had been recorded over!

I've seen a few car yards in Perth using lock-boxes. They clip over the top of the window and are held in place by putting the window up. All keyed alike with a security key, and all the salesmen have a copy. I assumed they locked them away at night, but I've seen them on cars at night.

Given how difficult it is to otherwise start a modern car, seems like leaving the keys around is a stupid idea. as I'd imagine an angle-grinder would make short work of the box.
That said, they'd still have to get past the bollards.

One explanation, apart from sheer laziness, is that they'd prefer a determined thief simply took the vehicle, rather than driving through their big glass door and ransacking the office for the keys.

By the time you got even close to a lock box on a car in a metro car yard you would be swarmed with cops, nearly all the car yards in Perth have security guards watching all night, you even look like you are suss and they have already made the call, in a matter minutes your getting your details checked out by the local police in person.

I know of a few panel shops that also use the lock boxes, when your dealing with hundreds of keys, its the easiest way to ensure your not paying for $1000+ lost key and coding.
