A lot of euro manufacturers have used rear mount batteries for quite some time. It was explained to me by an ex Porsche/Mercedes mechanic that this is done for a couple of reasons:-
1. weight balance benefit 2. Cold. As you know, extreme cold reduces battery life. As most of Europe experiences snow at some time, by having the battery effectively inside the car, it protects it from the cold far more effectively than by being exposed to extreme cold in an engine bay. Makes sense on both counts to me.

The number 1 enemy of batteries is heat. This is what shortens their lifespan and hence the reason for many european cars having a "second" firewall the battery sits behind. Mercedes Benz (these guys make very few compromises!) have used boot mounted batteries for years. If it's in the boot it can be positioned much closer to the roadway and you're not restricted to the size of battery you want to use. Benz use N70Z size batteries in some models. For the uneducated they're bloody big batteries! With todays vehicles needing more and more juice this comes as no suprise to me.

Dont be surprised when you see cars going to 36 volts in the not too distant future to help minimise the effects of voltage drop.

LOL, what baloney :p
In the boot because as other people mentioned it helps with Heat issues (the worse enemy of Batteries) and also weight distrubution. And there are charge poles under the bonnet if u need to jump start the car. |

i saw the VE a couple days ago cruising in the city ... only thing is, it had CHEV badges on it!
Back end looked like a BA, overall, kinda ricy, dont like it |

Saw a car carrier today with 6 to 8 VE's. From the stocky model to the SS. First time in the flesh. They do remind me of a camry.

I had special privelidges today and checked out a VE SS. The guys there were joking about me not being able to locate a battery until I opened that felt panel in the boot. There are special jumper terminals in the engine bay as mentioned. The interior is way ahead of the falcon now and its chalk and cheese with the old VY-VZ model too. Apart from the rear end, holden haven't done a bad job at all. There will be all these options including GTO pontiac looking stripes and colour co-ordinated dash lighting too. No BS as I have the brochures and stuff from holden to prove it. It's going to leave the current falcon for dead but maybe no near as much as the VT v EL.
