I call them driving lights, not foglights.
What the hell is wrong with them anyway? I can't see a problem with driving around with them on.

I am 99.99% sure Fog lights are illegal to drive with on unless there IS fog.
Also, 4x4 lights are not the pain in the butt you think they are. I have a Nissan Patrol with factory headlights which are the old crappy Sealed Beam type. 4x4 owners like Car owners can get headlight upgrades aswell as Fog light upgrades and not ALL 4x4 owners have these. So while your driving around with your "Fog lights" on, does that mean I can drive with my Driving lights on? Also, if some yobbo has their Red rear Fog light on while I am behind them, then they cop my Hightbeam and 100w Spotties, they distract me with their stupid little red lights that you can not see their brake lights clearly and easily then they can have an eye full of my lights for me to combat theirs.

To be honest as long as the front lights are aligned i don't care either way. My gripes are rear fog lights, and auto lights. Who has been driving behind a car only to go through a small dark patch or very short tunnel only to have the car in front have its lights turn on automatically? Toyota Aurion is the main offender now that they sell so many. I have been driving behind a few and it is very annoying seeing the lights turn on and off like brake lights.

I think the SSs are the biggest issue. I don't think they have glare shield on their fog lights. The XRs do.

I think most of you who are negative, probably don't own the fog lights. Makes for a great stirring debate.

I have foul weather lights (usually known as fog lights) on both my vehicles ... and use them accordingly ... I get a lot of fog and mist through my area and I do need them regularly.
If it is clear weather ... i do drive with lights on still ... but my low beam only ... and that's plenty. I use foul weather lights in rain spray, fog, smoke, mist, etc. When doing so though i turn my low beam off at the time (as they really are not effective at the time due to being blinded by the fog, spray, etc.) ... Hence why the lower lights should be used only in conjection with position lights only. If you can use low beam safely at the time there is no need for foul weather lights on at the time. Have seen this debate many a time on here ... it gets a tad boring. Last time i read the law it was a little ambiguous for NSW ... and it came down to Police officer discretion at the time. Rear fog light (red) misuse was a 1 point $70 offence though ... front fog lights was not an actual offence at the time (it may have changed now). There's no need for misusing them .... it comes down to pretty much what Flappist said though.

Meeting COMPLIANCE for a lamps function means a lamp - IF it is installed correctly (AD13 for MA, MB and MC - ADR19 for others), is to be accepted as a stamp of 'photometric quality'. Yes, some with the same stamp will be 'better' than others, BUT the key criteria of beam parameter, chromatic and photometric performance will be uniform. Note 1: "DRIVING LAMPS", wired to operate when a headlight switch is on high-beam only, are NOT front fog lamps. Note 2: "FRONT FOG LAMPS" are sadly, owing some stupid ignorant QLD'er who had its way with old FORS years ago in relation to ADR's13/19, means they will operate on the Park, Low and High-Beam headlights, IF its front fog lamp switch is also 'on'. JUST BECAUSE they operate on LOW-BEAM ladies doesn't mean they are 'driving lights', 'passing lights' etc. Be assured, that despite the wildest of drug parties or other illegal substances you take, NOTHING will change the compliance markings of ANY COLOURED front fog lamp FROM its designed AND MARKED (on lens) function. A 'function' that is now controlled by regulation in exactly the same manner as ALL other vehicle lighting matters. I have to say, this lighting stuff is seriously primary school, if some folk in a motor forum cannot comprehend this exceedingly simple stuff, christ knows why you think GovCo should ever raise speed limits, when simple stuff cannot be 'done right'. GOD FORBID the outcome IF ever the academics get their way and we end up having MANDATORY DRL's in Australia!! Imagine this, car approaches, 'ON' is its; * Low beam headlights (optional mayyyte). * DRL's (P12V/21w) These will be AUTO-ON at ignition, think of a rear fog lamp but in white-optic with similar characteristics. * Front fog lamps (Nah- - these be 'driving' lamps see coppa - cause I'm 'drivin' ay??). * Cornering lamps (I wired these 'light things' ON full-time cobbah - they didn't do nuthin so I thought they were unconected driving lights). See directly above for his interpretation of 'driving light''! [Cept fool to send a beam of torch-like light diagonally across the lanes-each way). Christ, and some think SE Asia is bad. One small issue of many other major 'driving' ones - just wait till GovCo start on those. Vest, triangle, first aid kit etc, then 'driving offences'. I *will* seek a 'MODIFICATION' to the new ARR217 to allow use of front fog lamps in clear weather conditions on "TWISTY, HILLY AND MOUNTAINOUS ROADS" as permitted under the UN Convention on Road Traffic, Signs & Signals. This is something a 'smart' driver can do now, IF they are prepared to go to higher courts. That will be fair enough - but just wait till you get DRL's here, auto-on - BUT WITHOUT taillights at all, naturally. Like I said above. |

Do you think that you’re the only one here that’s ever had a car with these stupid lights fitted? You’re lucky that the copper didn’t fine you for this. I hope the next time it’s the same copper that pulls you over for the same offence. That way you can start a new thread about how the cops are picking on you.

Keepleft, you put foreward some good point (confusing yes - but good) but what is the actuall issue with having them on, i see them on all the time and am not phased by it.
As mentioned earlier, i am "dazzled" much more by Idiots in 4WD's and Tradie utes (that overlaod their tray, pointing their low beams sky high). |

i have ppl behind me with their fog lights in the xr's etc, doesnt really bother me cause doesnt really affect my sight through the mirrors, but i can understand both sides to the story, i do hate the 4WD fog lights tho. in saying this, ive seen a few xr's with just there first set of lights on (whatever the name is forget now) and the fog lights on instead of just there regular headlights on? what do ppl here think of drivers who that, and whats the law for that too, or is it "doesnt matter fog lights are for fog" when it comes to the law book?

its the people who disregard the law, they will eventually get booked. its not about each person's opinion whether fog light daze them or not. if you personally feel you want foggies on whenever, then its up to you to take it up with the authorities to change to legislation. but at the moment, use your foggies irresponsibly and you will pay the price. hello!!!!! obey the law or you shouldn't be driving at all.
