Hey Tibbo

We tried that in 2004 when the petrol/gas prices were almost exactly what they are today, however we bought an AUII and ran it on petrol only and didn't convert it to gas. We said it'd be a six month trial. Well, four months into it and petrol resumed it's dubious value at $1/ltr and we decided to stop shooting ourselves in the foot and just put it on gas.

But interesting what you say, i'm even considering running my falc on pedderol one of these days.

For the last month or so my cabs have been on petrol, petrol was $1 and LPG was 80c. Today I changed back as LPG has dropped to 69.9c finally so is worth (just) running LPG again.

Not worth it for private cars here at the moment.

I just drove through Geelong, the price of fuel was 103.9c for 91, and for LPG it was 41.9, Cabs running on Petrol over LPG to save money, that's crazy.

thinking of the origional post . lpg cannot be charged for any carbon offset , as it is a clean green fuel . this will cost governments a lot of money in the future .

To the first post, IMO long-term possible, immediate to medium term highly unlikely.
Applying the fundamentals of economics your source does not seem to be so credible. But time will tell, good for them if they are right but unfortunate to lpg consumers and their wallets

This is off the lpgaustralia.com.au website

INTERNATIONAL LPG PRICING

Why does Australia buy and sell LPG at the Saudi Contract price?

In January 1991, the Federal Government deregulated the wholesale price of LPG in Australia. As part of this process, Australian LPG prices moved to reflect the fact that LPG is an internationally traded commodity, and thus influenced by international prices.

The major international price benchmark impacting LPG markets in the Far East (includes Australia) is the Saudi Aramco Contract Price ("Saudi CP" or just "CP") expressed in US dollars per metric tonne. This is because Saudi Arabia is the major supplier of LPG to term contract buyers in Asia. The Saudi CP is set and published on the first business day of the month.

The Bass Strait producers and other producers in South and Western Australia can export their LPG at such international prices (in US Dollars). Importers of LPG into Australia’s east coast have to pay international LPG prices, including freight, to land the propane. Australian LPG prices therefore reflect international price movements.

This is consistent with all commodities traded internationally. Agriculture and resource producers are similar to LPG producers in that they are price takers in international commodity markets and do not control the prices they can obtain for their product. Australia does not have an influence on price benchmarks as our production of LPG is small compared to other Far East producers. Similarly, Australian pricing of crude oil and refined products is linked to international prices.

RECENT TRENDS

The international price of crude oil has fallen considerably from the record highs achieved during June 2008. These lower crude prices have had a corresponding impact on the price of other internationally traded liquid fuels such as LPG. Demand for butane as a petrochemical feedstock has also reduced.

As a result the December 2008 Saudi Aramco Contract Price (CP) for a metric tonne of propane has now moved down to USD 340 with butane down to USD 335, decreases of around 30.6% and 31.6% respectively from the November 2008 rates.

RETAIL LPG AUTOGAS PRICING

Retail LPG Autogas prices may move in similar discounting cycles to petrol prices which reflect local competitive pressures. Retailers discount product to protect and gain market share at times of low demand. However, discounting can bring retail prices below cost and therefore the market cannot sustain this for a prolonged period of time, and prices rise.

42.5 here in sydney . less 4 cents with woolworths voucher. petrol about $1.01.

petrol has been as low as 88c here in sydney . but fluctuates up and down by about 15c weekly . ' lpg has steadily been coming down . i think lpg will get into the 30's soon . and petrol will start rising in the earlier part of 09 . taking lpg back on the upswing with it . however lpg here in sydney sits around 45% of petrol prices .

LPG has finally dropped in Mudgee for the first time in nearly a year. It dropped a whopping 5c to 64.9c/pl while ULP is still at 112.9pl. I was in Dubbo the other day and ULP is 99.5c there so I have to wonder how they justify an extra 13c pl to cart fuel a whole 130km extra.

On 10 Dec I paid 90c/l for LPG in Walgett. On 21 Dec I paid 43.7 in Drummoyne, no discount ticket. Walgett has always been dear but over double???

With Discount voucher LPG @ 37cpl in Easter burbs at most SHELL servos today.

ULP ...$1.05 with voucher or @ 1.09 at 3 shell servos today without voucher. United was 100.9 c in Scoresby and Mulgrave !!!

I wonder if all the LPG is made in Victoria. It seems very cheap there and SA with it being expensive is all the other states. I suspect LPG transport would be a much bigger pain than petrol/diesel which may account for the difference. Here, E10 is still in the low 80s with ULP in the high 80s/low 90s and 98ron just about to crack the "less than a dollar" barrier (I hope)

Diesel, of course, is still $1.20++ which always brings a little smile to my dial when I see the brizzo harry butlers going white with shock and fanning their new akubras after pumping $LOTS into their super shiny mike and mal leyland endorsed sticker covered blocks of flats on wheels.

LOL, yeah true!
Maybe you're right about LPG being made in Vic and priced accordingly.. There sure seems to be a price hike as you head north...
