if you take the emotion out of the equation, there is very little difference in the health and environmental risks between new petrol and diesel engines. This is especially true now that more and more petrol cars are also running high pressure direct injection fuel systems. The micro particulates that everyone is worried about from diesels are just as much of an issue in petrol cars, and providing the cars are maintained well the NOx emissions of both are very similar.
It does make me laugh though that while we are having these discussions, and as long as there are no yearly checks on our cars, we are flooded with crap from both petrol and diesel old cars..... |

I've had this same conversions several times over the years on cycling forums where they don't want semi's clogging up their roads during peak hour but expect their fresh bread and fresh avo's to be in store first thing in the morning for their arrival into town.
These same people whinge about trucks and the pollution they cause ?? but are quite happy to jump on planes every weekend and fly out of town to ride their bike somewhere safe from those polluting trucks, just ask the pollies flying out of Canberra every Friday night who make these stupid laws. As for stopping semi's from journeying into the cities so little Freddie doesn't have to smell diesel good luck with that. Some of the dimwits I meet who have never seen where their food comes from need to open their eyes. In the US, the Republic of Commie-fornia has banned trucks which don't use particulate filters from venturing over their border but are starting to feel the pitch of trucking companies refusing to supply them fuel and food from the other lower 47 states.

The thing with making diesels cleaner is it makes the soot particles smaller, and more easily absorbed by the lungs.
The same thing is the case with petrol direct injection. I believe that the next Euro emissions level will require direct injection petrol engines to have a particulate filter just like diesels do. |

The only problem I have with diesel vehicles today, is the loss of simplicity of a diesel.
As long as you had a clean supply of diesel free of air and compression, she would be a goer. Now with the emissions side of things, electronics have made them not much different in reliability to a petrol. I realise manufacturers had little option, just a shame. The single biggest breakdown problems with the trucks at work isn’t mechanical as such, but the sensors and general electronics to run them, and then Adblu problems is another one. |

The powr stations aren't riding up behind you and filling your cabins with particle killing ****. Ever tried to ride a bike behind a badly tunned diesel, I have I had to spew more than three times in one week thanks to diesal buyers that have no fkn idea how to maintain a diesel and think its clean for life. Dumb fcks. Lets face it if a car works who give a fck how many people it kills. Who gives a fck how many black femusit bellows. Monitor the amount of black carsiagenics you car is producing and do something about it you filthy lasy pricks.

Co2 is much less harmful to the inhabitants because it rises into the atmosphere and causes globle warming, bad or good, this is for another discussion. But filthy diesel remains at ground level for baby and every other human to injest every time they walk out the safety of there own home. I thimk its time to see facial masks used to protect against these incidious cancer causing and many other respitary ilineses that are bought on wholly buy diesel ingestatin. Terrible legacy that pollies and big oil have sweeped under the rug and will cost them 500 billion in the next 15 years

Lucky the car you own that runs on Unleaded doesnt pollute at all.
You could walk out onto the road and get hit by a truck tommorrow, stupid thread is stupid. (more than likely the truck that hits you is a diesel)

Right at the minute , without diesels of all sorts the planet couldn't function. It's as simple as that . Try getting millions of tonnes of food , equipment , general goods , even people to work or school among other things without diesel powered vehicles . Building infrastructure and other vital construction or even demolition would be basically impossible at a sustainable cost and speed.
I know in regard to really heavy duty rail movements the cost of moving massive weights via diesel electric locomotives is the only way we get our stuff and locomotive manufacturers are meeting even stricter emission requirements as we speak. This type of freight , essential , is arriving cleaner and cleaner as each year passes. It has to . No doubt trucking and automotive diesel manufacturers are doing it better too , mostly anyway . To the do gooders on this subject , maybe you should consider all the aspects of diesel before the baby gets hurled out with the bath water. |

The change of Government support for diesel is having knock on effects in all sorts of areas. The cut back in subsidies for bio-diesel is leading to shortages and price increases for glycerine (they are typically co-produced) in food & personal care; regardless of the source, palm, corn, rapeseed or animal fat.
Government regulating markets is all well & good but enforcement of the regulations and/or bias in establishing the regulations ie the VW Diesel gate saga, is always lots of fun when politics overrides good science.
