I watched this the other day. Stealing anyone car is bad but these cars are limited and a part of our history that makes it worse

Are the later Falcons and FPVs at risk too or is this mostly later VE/VF thing?

One comment on Paul Maric's vid

"Tip
Buy an OBD port pigtail from a salvage yard .
Remove the real OBD from stock location and hide it.
Wire the pigtail into the horn circuit so that 12volts is on the data pins to fry any device they plug in.
Theft protection and revenge for the cost of a pigtail."

A small satisfaction in bricking the crim's device. Just remind your mechanic you've done this before the service.

I’m somewhat suspicious about the overall goings-on as alleged.

What if there are multiple causes of the surge in reported thefts? It’s often human nature to look for a single cause when there can be several.
  • Overcommitted owners (insurance fraud)
  • Quick turnover, low-profit theft (drug users / petty crims)
  • Parts go to people propping up heavily worn or damaged examples
  • Parts go to performance car builders and engine swappers
  • Sophisticated rebirthing of genuinely collectible examples (the real scum)
The insurance fraud bracket would be emboldened by the other groups’ actions.

Insurance jobs are generally just burn them to the ground.

What a world we live in that stealing a car is likely to net you a smaller fine/slap on the wrist than being caught speeding.

I know of stolen cars that were recovered and the thieves caught in the act of taking parts off, by just having a air tag or similar and tracking where the car has gone.

I have a similar device installed in my car trailer somewhere so if it goes walkies I can recover it and have a chat

Older laws have lower potential penalties then newer laws that have been introduced because of media attention on an issue,

No different than giving my car a bit of stick could see it crushed, but get caught blind drunk and I can drive it away from the side of the road the next day.

I wonder if the same situation may occur with late model Falcons as parts dry up.

Might not be as easy to steal,

Usually with diagnostics, you can't access any diagnostic functions without the ignition turned on, wonder if thats the case with the VE/VF or they have access to the diagnostic port and can run functions with the key out and car off - ie the port is always ready to transmit data.

Shit like this is exactly why I don't trust automotive manufacturers with personal information/internet/your data, because they can't even secure their own cars from being stolen by some flog with a $100 tool on eBay, automotive manufacturers know absolutely jack shit about IT/networking, nor do they care at all, and they're running head forward into IoT bullshit at a rate of knots where they want all your personal information to sell to the highest bidder, and subscription based services.

I presume that a wake signal is able to be imparted to the CAN network quite easily, most modules have a keep-alive power feed.

It’s probably easier to hack into a car this way when it’s got individual modules in each door, which rules out the Falcons.

Also on the online groups and it sickens me.

They are stealing the cars in under about a minute. Override the ECU and re program their key via the OBD port after cutting the horn wires, they sometimes also tape up the indicators so there's no sound or light emitted when the alarm first activates.

I would say most of these wouldn't be insurance jobs as the junkies are seen driving around in them for days weeks stealing other cars with them etc.

There was one poor guy who had installed a GPS tracker, seen his car (VF SS off memory) hit over 200 KM/Hr multiple times. Told Vic police he has them live tracked only to be told they didn't have the resources to recover his car and catch them!

I would love the police to use a few bait cars and toughen up our laws for this. As said above, we are in a position where the fine for moderate speeding far outweighs what these crims get which just isn't right.

I thinking of one of these:

https://is.gd/3qUnOb

Not perfect, but will slow down access considerably.

And a hidden killswitch.

Anyone done an OBD lock on their falcons and can report which one fits? I would say looking at the design of the above one it wouldnt be suitable if we left the OBD in the factory spot.

I was thinking the same thing. Most of these devices don't have dimensions.I just measured approximately ~12mm between the face of the OBDIi connector and the fuse box door/cover. Not much room around the connector either..

The local TV current affairs would just love being in on a story like that. Especially if they can help track down the car. Ticks the youth crime box. Ticks the police overrun with crime box. Ticks the disinterested politician box.

Yes. Sigh. Agree. Exceed the speed limit by 3 kph on a down hill run in a car you own hits the wallet far harder than stealing someone else's car, doing 200 kph, and end up totalling it.

Been a lot of general thefts going on, last two days going to work I've seen heaps of pantech trailers broken into in the Ravenhall industrial estate too with the latches busted and the doors open.

Some guy posted a video of a crack whore outside a building site, they were doing the site over and loading tools or supplies into the back of a stolen VF SS.
The car was rooted, on a spare tyre, dents in every panel, smashed headlight and bumper.
Old mate called the cops and they arrested them, prompt response time by the sounds of it.
