As i posted earlier the results of this have no bearing on my purchase decision.. the 2 are mutually exclusive.

Easiest way I've found is to encourage her to go and buy a car she likes. The last one she wanted was the 370Z and it wasn't based on fast versus comfort.

Making a decision based on feeling over reality is very very rarely anything to do with a poor suspension or anything remotely linked to it.

It’s a bit like making a comment about drivability then claiming you change gears to overtake something. Drivability or "that feeling" or "flexibility" is not a statement on outright performance. Cars that have the reputation as fastest don’t necessarily reflect the best 'driveability" expressed in day to day driving conditions or usability as reflect in a percentage of the ownership experience.

There are a number of factors that can lead to this deceptive conclusion such as seating position and NVH right through to the more tangible torque and gearing aspects of the package in question.

For me drivability and all that encompasses always trumps bragging rights. However there is certainly a portion that believes in not having to make excuses for ones purchase. The reputation deserved or not, gives street credibility. When you have that, your machine and not your mouth does the talking.

If acceptance or credibility is a concern or factor ( and let’s be honest here) most recognise peek numbers but few understand or recognise the importance of drivability in perception and ultimately that wider acceptance.

people aren't very good at hypothesising. seems some can't give an answer unless they are talking specifics. maybe they are worried that they might be shown up as a hypocrite in their real life decisions.

True.

As a general question/poll it's a good one, and I'm glad it'll never affect your decision to buy something for the wife. If I wanted something for the Mrs I know it's more to do with renowned reliability, vanity mirrors everywhere, a little section to do the cooking on the way home if she's late, dishwasher for when we're out on a picnic, ironing board, shower, shoe rack, dressing table... these kinda things.

Back to the pole. "B" is the obvious answer, but this is a hypothetical, and in reality the car that feels quicker is the quicker anyway.

Conversly, a ride at the show or theme park fells like you are breaking the sound barrier when infact you are not going very fast at all.

For a vehicle to feel faster on the "bum-o-meter" it must be jerky and bumpy.

So.......do you want a JET or a THEME PARK RIDE..........
LOL what a great example! Do you want a mode of transport or do you want an exciting ride?

How many people line up at the airport to take a plane to perth cause they get excited by the takeoff?

How many people line up at movie world to ride the "superman escape" all the way to perth?

2 different audiences and both are right.

I am going to completely leave the 6 and 8 thing as well as the FPV and HSV thing alone (or any other thing you can think of that closes threads).

I think there have been some excellent points on here and the key to it all is it comes down to personal choice.

One of the factors that greatly influences personal choice is circumstance, what is right for you at the time.

I have been in the situation a number of times where I have let the bum-o-meter buy the car instead of the cold hard facts, I do not regret that. Now my circumstances have changed and with all other car features being the same, I would go for the faster not the "feels the fastest". Why, because I don't want a boy racer car that seems fast, I want a bit more subtle that is fast.

Please do not assume I am tlking F6 and GT, I am not, the examples in my mind are not even Ford.

I have bought 2 turbos because they feel more refined, faster and eager to respond. Fact they were better on paper was basically irrelevant to me.

I bought my car because it felt quick but it doesn't have bad figures on paper either too. My car is a 2003 WRX for interests sake :

My car is still stock after 3 years of ownership and I have plenty money to pump 350-400atw easy too so I'd say I'm pretty happy with the performance although I will most likely buy a XR6T or SS next ;)

4V, If they are your only 2 determining factors, then I think you are more suited to LS1 forums. :

Seriously, I would take neither option into consideration. I'd buy the car that best suits my needs and wants.

Firstly,
Looks good inside and out (by that I mean suits MY taste, screw what others think)
Is practical for my needs
Has what I want.
Is not a Holden/HSV!!

Then after this criteria narrows down the options, I'd pick the best out of the following:
Is most Comfortable
Drives and handles best
Would hold better resale value

If I was narrowed down to only your options, I would go for what FEELS fastest, As you said it will not see a track..
Public roads have cops enforcing speed limits. so BEING fastest is useless.

if you re read the original post you will notice that 4vman specifically says 'all other aspects of the cars are equal in your mind...' meaning the search (hypothetically) has been narrowed to 2 vehicles each with slightly different performance credentials and characteristics. it has also been pointed out that the 2 vehicles could in fact be the same except one auto, one manual.

no need for me to re-read. I picked that up the first time. Perhaps you could re read my last paragraph.

I just gave my overall opinion. My appoligies if that upsets you.

This couldnt be more true!!! There are many things to make a car feel faster, and go faster. im sure the xr6T and the typhoons snap ur neck more than a GT, but if you want to feel like the king D*** of the road, nothing does it better than having a big throbbing V8 under the bonnet

See thats a matter of personal perception, I feel more like King D*** on the road in my Typhoon than I ever did in my XR8. Its not because of how fast it is, thats just a by product, but more just for the whole package and how it does its thing on a daily basis.

A great thread.

My situation was that I needed a big car, performance-orientated, good looking and practical.

After about a year of crunching numbers both specs and dollars, I had narrowed it down to VE SV6 vs BF II XR6 N/A.

XR6 won.

Why? Suited my needs better. VE was very quick- engine was very revvy and the car felt very quick especially mid-range where you usually need it in the real world for passing. But the XR6 was smoother, more refined in the driveline, MUCH QUIETER, better looking and just as fast if not faster to drive in the real world. Has more torque too if we go by numbers. Kind of "cigar and slippers" fast while the VE was "one trick pony" fast.

yeah, but look at the power an XR8 has compared to your typhoon....and an XR doesnt have the appeal of an FPV
