They ARE an iconic brand in Australia. The 'Holden' brand is UNIQUE to Australia. Yes, their parent company is a multinational. Are they denying that at all? Can you please point out exactly where they are claiming that they are 100% Australian owned or their cars are 100% Aussie designed and built?[/QUOTE]
Rick,Rick, I not saying Holden claim they are 100% anything. Simply, they / you still perpetuate the myth they ARE UNIQUELY more Aussie or Australia's own favourite brand simply because their parent Yankee doodle company 'GMC' called this market GM /Holden. 'Holden means a great deal to Australia'. Yeah big deal!

Australia had a car that was concieved, designed, and built here using only local componants. And it was almost completely ignored by the car buying public.. the legendary P76 ppl

build quality was shocking, Ford, Holden & Valiant offered better looking vehicles, The 6 cylinder engine was gutless, Only the V8 won car of the year, a major fuel crisis scared buyers away from large thirsty vehicles. Also the engines were Leyland England. I reckon Holden are very multicultural, they have a multicultural work force, they export & import parts & vehicles & ideas. Most vehicle manufacturers are these days, that is the only wasy to survive in a tough vehicle manufacturing world. |

I looked at the build plate in my VL and it said it was built here in Aus.
Meh I dont care if Holden isnt 100% Australian I just like Holdens because they arent japanese and ive always liked the look of Holdens. Theres no point in arguing which is more Australian Fords or Holdens cause they both still produce great domestic cars no matter how you look at it. Last edited by Ryan; 13-08-2005 at 03:30 PM. |

In 1979, Holden decided to use the European designed Opel: Ford also went with an European-derived design for the Falcon XD which was heavily based on the Ford Granada........Blame the Germans for all of it!! However, Ford didnt use the Essex V6 but Holden used the 202 in Kingswoods/Commodores as was used in Crestas/Opel Commodores in Europe. Best not to use the Escort as an example as these were purely Europen, even the ones built here. The only differences were small and pretty much limited to suspension and a couple of other things just to suit the local conditions.

To me the holden a a fully imported workhorse, maybe not the newst of the holdens. But with the old 3800 engines that were taken out from Chevis or buiks, the new gearboxes that are from some european company, The old VL RB engines that were taken from Nissan, the only true aussie Commodores are the VK and older models with the old 3.3 and 5 litre V8.
Fords on the other hand have a American name, but all their engines are made here, and found nowhere else in the world. Gearboxes may be another matter but to hat I know the T5 is made here and the 4 speed autos are made here. So these days Ford is getting more aussie than the holdens from 1986 onwards. Mitsubishi I would class as quite an aussie car, their magnas are all built here and the engines made here. So I would say that Magnas and Falcons are more of an Aussie Car than Holden.. And for those idiots that say that Holden is aussie coz of its name, I would like to thow a Brick at there head with an inscription GENERAL MOTORS HOLDEN on it. |

both companies take their share of components from other companies, ford and holden do it, car companies are more global now than what they used to be decades ago, so its bound to happen, geez the mighty american muscle of the Ponitac GTO is now a worthless Holden Monaro, and i agree with the rest of you, if holden ment a big deal to Australia, they would atleast design an Australian car, just not copy a European one
