Default Pagan Sacked

Blues sack Pagan after drubbing

Carlton have sacked embattled coach Denis Pagan and replaced him with former club champion Brett Ratten.
Pagan's future was decided during a meeting earlier today with senior club officials including Blues president Richard Pratt and chief executive Greg Swann.
The final straw for the Carlton hierarchy came with yesterday's 117-point drubbing to Brisbane. The Blues have lost their last five matches and currently sit in 14th place on the ladder.
During Pagan's five years in charge the Blues have never finished higher than 11th and have claimed the last two wooden spoons.
Prior to joining the Blues, Pagan, 59, coached the Kangaroos to the 1996 and 1999 premierships.

Poor caretaker coach, Carlton haven't beaten St. Kilda since 2001!! Not a good week to come into the job!

Heard it on the radio today after reading about Sheehan's opinion in the paper this morning. Couldn't believe it all happened to quick!

Ah well, as long as us blue boys don't win four or more and don't land on the bottom i'll be happy!

Carlton's problems run a lot deeper than the coach, no good backmen, no good ruckmen, Fevola being a selfish tool, overplaying and killing the kids....... :togo:

I wonder if Pagan just couldnt work with the garbage that he inherited when he joined the club. It hasnt been in good shape for years since its previous dramas... Werent there salary cap problems and penatlies, etc which had a large impact?

Here we go - merry go round coaches!

You're calling the top pick kids of the last few years garbage? There's a VERY good side there at the moment, it's just gonna take time, like all clubs.

agree with some comments, carlton has a very good side, although we do need some work, in the back half included,
i also heard bret ratten to coach till the end of the season, i believe carlton will be up in the top 8 within the next 4 years, players are good but need more experiance

After the salary cap scandal and the lack of draftpics for years they were stung for, they needed to rebuild and start off with some new talent.

Pagan did a poor job in rebuilding and focused on recruiting older players that were on their way out (Mckernan, Mick Martyn, etc) and did a bad job of disciplining alot of their players, ie Fevola thinks he is a prima donna, the Angwin and Norman drug saga, etc.

They basically need to start over and Ratten may be the man to do it.

After Worsfold and Roos coaching Success at their former playing clubs it might be their best option. I sure hope they dont go for Connolly.

Thats what I meant. I did not mean the last couple of years, but the years before that with all the scandals and punishments which were always going to take a long time to come back from. Didnt Pagan pretty much inherit all of that? That stuff is not fixed in a couple of years, despite having best draft picks in the last two years or so...

I reckon they have potential, will just take more time and patience from the club, in their rebuilding. I feel sorry for Pagan. I dont think it is fair to blame the coach solely for a club doing badly....

This news was first released at 12pm, but officially announced at 2.

I added my view on the Herald Sun's thing.

Whitnall is not the right person for captain, Fevola needs to grow up and stop throwing child-like tantrums and Matthew Lappin needs to accept greater responsibility. Nick Stevens would be a far better captain. Pagan has a good football brain but given the list he was handed, as well as the instability at board level for too long, Pagan was never going to succeed. Carlton needs to accept that they will not be any good for a little while, take a breath and recruit properly, rather than search for short term fixes. When the current Carlton players retire, they'll realise what a disgrace their efforts have been for too long.

Was Pagan incharge of Recruiting?

What do you think he did wrong with Anwin and Norman?

If I were a Blues fan I would absoloutley hate the players/new coach to come in and start thinking they are going show how good they are and win a game or three this year. You dont have to win a wooden spoon to get the best couple of up and coming kids in the country (on top of the last year or two's)...What better way to build a solid team for 10 years+... I'd be hoping the new coach/caretaker can swollow his pride for the last 6 weeks.

I think it'll be a good thing for the club and was needed to shake the players up and bring in some fresh idea's as we have got great stars that just dont believe in there own ability. Why witnall is captain l dont know as no other club would even have him on there list he's that poor a player. I cant wait for the father son rule to kick in on the silvagni , dean , ratten , williams, boys.

Lol I agree with you on this...There arent too many Carlton Faithfull that agree with you I think, Just look at Robert Walls, he thinks hes one of the Champs of the Comp and was pushing for him to be captain for ages and to sack Fev. If hes got the football brain most blues fans say then perhaps he should retire and be the new coach because it doesnt make you a good player, especially the way the games played now with atletes.

Lets hope they dont put Michael Voss in there... Thats just like putting lambs to the slaughter, in the increasingly cut throat world of coaching, he will be out of a job in 3 years, as thats not a long enough time to turn around a club which is ailing...

And for whoever predicted 4 coaches sacked this year, Sheedy should be number 4 to go

Sheeds would do the right thing by the club no matter what, that's just how he is. I reckon Neale Daniher will get the job, either him or "Bomber" Thompson who is out of contract this year.
