10w-30's recommended for the i6's but i think thats for fuel economy not the wallet, think u'd be safe with a good quality 20w50 (unless u live in a really cold place and dont warm ur engine). autobarn had castrol magnatec on special for $20 (sell it at $44 were i work) so that was cheap as chips. thats high quality 10w-40 i think. penzoil also makes a decent 10w30 but at the moment im using shell eco10 which is supposed to increase fuel economy somhow?

I wanna stick with Pennzoil i swear by it. Just dunno whether to get a 20-50 or a 10-30 or what. And need alot of peoples advice because i dont wanna use the wrong one! Im not a fan of Castrol Magnatec. Think ill be going Pennzoil or Penrite
Also whats your take on mineral, semi-synthetic and full synthetic? Is it alright to use a Mineral based oil. Being a igh performance motor i would say Mineral wouldnt be to good.

id use semi or fully synthetic both are good..as for grade depends on how many KM'S you car has done higher grade for more kms etc as for brand my opinion is mobil1 is the best and ya pay for it too..but most good brands are all good these days...Im a mechanic and we use valvoline at work & i use it in my car and my familys etc & im very happy with it for your car Valvoline Problend 15w40 would be the go....

At 100,000k's your motor is barely run in. I still use 5W30 (per the filler cap) on my I6 with 320,000k's. The EFI Windsors are supposed to be good for 500,000k's. Stick with the recommended grade until it starts to use oil then go heavier. Tried 15W40 in mine once & it was flat until 3000rpm. You only need heavier oil once the rings &/or bores start to wear & oil leaks through.

Penrite recommend HPR10.
http://www.penritedata.com/au/db/veh...192&x=239&y=16 Pennzoil Recommend PLATINUM 5W/40 http://www.pennzoil.com.au/lubematch/pz_lubematch.asp Google works wonders.

But that's not why. I would have recommended Penrite, but would have needed to look up the right spec oil anyway for an AU2/3 XR8. So I used google. The fact that you already had 2 oils in mind made the search easier, and if you knew the answer (about google), and you already had one or two preferred brands in mind, why didn't you use google? I'm pretty sure it gives the same answers in the West as it does over here, even if it is 2 or 3 hours behind.

Because i would rather ask other car enthusiasts what they use, and what weight they use

I think edge would be a bit thin (the synthetic type anyway).. use magnetec or a blend of edge/gtx3 .

10/30 is recommended for the I6, the V8s need a 5W40 or 10W40. As others have said, your engine is barely run in, so the weight of oil as specified in your owners manual, or as recommended on the oil manufacturers sites is what I would go for. You could use 20W50 at a pinch, especially coming into summer, but I would play it safe and use the recommended viscosity, but as it's your car, it's entirely up to you. There's not much chance of it doing damage by using the 20W50, and there's really not much performance gain to be had from using mineral or synthetic oil, as long as you change it when it needs changing, and you use the viscosity as specified, or close to it (and 20W50 is close to 10W40 - but not in winter).

Our local Ford dealer use Magnatec 10W40 in I6s even though they are specified as 10W30.

Our 4.6 V8 Explorer specifies some weird oil like a 5W20, but then the owners manual stipulates that if that's not available, then a 10W30 or 0W30 can be used for top ups, and a 10W30 can be used for a full change. Oils ain't oils!!!

Why don't you listen to what JC says and then thank him for his time and effort. You may also (if you have a brand in mind) email/phone their tech support and ask what they recommend for your car at it's present mileage. I did that when I wanted to change my diff oil to synthetic. A couple of emails back and forth and I was satisfied with my choice. |

No it wouldn't matter. usually there's a sticker on the inside of the windscreen that mechanics put there to tell you when the next oil change should be - it should also have the brand/type of oil last used (well, my XR8 did, as I used to use HPR10, which comes with a sticker on the bottle for that very purpose).

just chucked 10/40 in mine as its coming to summer and i think i use 5/30 in the winter months just a combo i thought of myself after reading up about the properties and stuff on oil, could be wrong but my car doesnt make any funny noises yet! also mines at 130000 so pretty similar k's and in perth.
and also i used an engine oil flush last oil change and it made a bit of sludge come out just some food for thought......

A 10/40-50 will be more than fine. Use the brand you want and she'll be apples.
All the best with your deliberations! GK
