Default Pardon my ignorance but...

Shannons upcoming auction has a HO in it expected to go for bewteen 6 and 800,000 dollars.
But there's a number plate expected to go for a mill, a number plate!!! The number is 6 if that means anything.

I mean at least with the HO you can drive it and enjoy it.
With a number plate what can you do?
"Honey I'm just going out to polish my number plate"
"Honey I'm just going to take the number plate for a drive"
"I only take my number plate out on weekends but not if it's raining"
"Honey, I'm going on a number plate cruise this weekend"

And imagine how easy it would be to steal, there goes a million real easy, not like you can put an immobiliser on it.

I dunno, I just don't get it.

If it gets stolen it doesn't matter as long as it's in your name vicroads can just make you another one. Also think about this; You don't have to insure a number plate, register it, tune it or anything and being a low number will always be worth money.

Its a bit weird isnt it, but I guess there is always somebody out there willing to pay it, and if not, they wont sell.

Personally I reckon at least some of the money from auctions like this should go to charity - not some collector's pockets.

Most of the people with this kind of coin already donate large portions of money to charity/taxes anyway

Mate, it's not the actual piece of metal that is valuable, it is the rights to what is on the plate that is valuable. If it gets stolen, it doesn't matter cos it will be worthless to anyone other than the person that owns the 'rights' to the plate. If it gets stolen, the owner just gets new plates - no need to insure a piece of metal that costs around $22 to replace.

OK maybe it's not worth stealing because it's replaceable, so therefore whats the point if it's just a reprint, it's not even the original.
What I'm getting at is $1,000,000 for a number plate, where's the fun in it I ask you.
Do you hang it on a wall and say "Look at my Picasso number plate".
For a mill I want something I can play with.

I don't get paying more than the RTA wants for a standard numberplate. It's the thing the cops use to identify you to book you, so what do I care what it is. :P I'll never have a personalised plate.

It'll look just like the million dollar one.

Don't get me wrong i agree with you, but the maintenance is a lot less on a piece of enamel, and to some people it's as good as a picasso : That, and the scary part is the price for that will only go up - regardless of how many kms it does or in what condition it's in.

But then again, the person who shells out the, say $700,000 cold hard ones for the HO - will they drive it? Perhaps once a year - a number plate is on your car 24/7 - so the bnetter value by the amount it is used ain't in the HO.....

yeah charities have never had it so easy. I'm down to about a dozen calls a week begging me to donate to diabetes, asthma, stroke research etc.

Those million dollar plate owners just keep shoveling the cash out.
