Red face Embarrassingly easy question.

On my recently purchased 1999 AU Fairmont, every time I accelerate the ash tray slides right out , hits the shift lever and lands in the centre console front tray, it seems a very loose sliding fit with nothing holding it in at all. Its starting to get annoying now.. What is supposed to hold it in please ?

Thanks
Taz

Thanks, It slides in ok but doesn't seem to clip into anything at all. I'm wondering if something hasn't broken of the tray or broken off the recess it slides into ?

If you know someone else with an AU, see how their ashtray fits, then you know what you need to replace.

Thanks stockoau, I dont know anyone else with an AU, but I'll pay a visit to a s/h car yard I think and see what's broken. No mention of it in the owners manual and I know it shouldn't be this loose .. sigh !

theres a small gold/brass coloured clip that locks the ashtray in, sounds like yours is missing. you can buy it from ford parts.

Or you could walk into a car yard wearing a coat with big pockets......

On a more serious note...Mine is a bugger to pull out to empty!

Thanks richo77, is that clip on the tray or inside the recess it slides into please ?

I think whats happened is that the car came with a large steel phone bracket bolted to the side of the radio, I recon someone has tried to remove the radio to take the bracket off and in the process they stuffed the clips on the radio and then tried to access the back of the radio via the ash tray slot as one of the 2 screws are missing at the back of the ash tray, in the process they must have broken off whatever it is that holds the ash tray in.

from memory the clip is at the top of the ashtray, its a bit tricky to get all back together after its been pulled out, probably thats why yours is missing.

i had my cd stacker replaced and had the same prob as you, pulled out of the driveway and had the tray come flying out. if/when you go to ford parts, they have a diagram that shows exactly where it goes.

good luck with it

Thanks very much richo77, there is nothing on the top of the ashtray at all so that must be it, I'll check with Ford and see what they say.

Its not a big problem I know, but I keep my hearing aids, heart attack pills and viagra in that ash tray and I'd like it to stay closed.
