Default Capri Engine Possibilities

Hay All

Just putting this out there to see what people think.

The “Misses” is looking for a project car for “Us”, what I’m trying to sell her on is a Capri.

though the question is what could or should go up in front?

So I’m wondering what people think.

Chances are it wont happen though it doesn’t hurt to dream a little.

i voted for the blown 5.4 just becuase it sounds tuff and will have huge bragging rights.

but seeing a capri with an xr6 turbo motor would be an awesome one-off site

I think any of those is going to be a VERY tight fit if any would fit at all, and also good luck getting any of those rego'd...

Most you can hope to get pass rego is a 302w nowdays.

That would be my first choice. 302W EFI, stroked to 347 more compact engine, give you room for twin turbos

I reckon a 302w would be a nice conversion.. cheap and simple.. Cheaper than the rest anyway..

I'd like to see a few more modern power plants fitted in Capris. I'm looking at fitting a 2.3lt Duratec in my Mk 3 Capri (eventually) I reckon it would be a lot more practical than a monster V8.....Not that there's anything wrong with that, (I've got one of them underway as well) but if the intention is to drive it on the road, personally, a V8 wouldn't be my first choice.

what about an sr20det or something along those lines.
4cyl will be compact, with turbo, easy hp really.

not sure on cost, but would be lighter than an 8 and go just as hard.

just a thought.

A Clevo fit's real well in a Capri : They are just a bit heavy :

But if were to buy another Capri, it would have an LS1 and not sure about a 6 speed man or auto trans with a high stall

And a 9 inch.

and sr20 has a shitload of power but low torque.. thats why they are always swapped with turbos... no matter how big the turbo is i still think a 302 wil have more power and low torque..

but yeah it would be easy and compact

the turbo 6 (Falcon6) would be something different and would attract less attention from the boys in blue and would be so quick with the light body(i`m thinking sleeper) and big low down torque ....and having good fuel economy, actually even with an egas engine it would still probably haul a55 in a capri......Hmmmm.

Main problem is that the C4 presently under the car does not fit the tunnel very well and a mate of mine is fitting a BTR in an XT where a C4 once lived.

He has to cut a heap of transmission tunnel out so obviously I have to cut a lot more than him.

I reckon of the three engines that you are contemplating the 6 will be too long (a 302 almost is too long) and the Boss would be too wide and heavy.

A Lexus LS430 donk would be good and it has already been done to a Capri in Aus.

Having done a Clevo in a Capri I can tell you its a bunch of fun and lots of easy horses cheap, but it is a big heavy lump. A 302W is a better swap practically.

BTW there is no need to cut anything to slide a C4 into that trans, all I had to do is tap up the top front of the tunnel to clear the top of the bellhousing, but that was only because it was a Clevo bellhousing which is bigger than a Windsor housing.

I reckon the inline XRT6 would be too long in that bay, though a good idea.

LS1! F**kin' heathen, go wash that mouth out!

Modular motor "may" fit, but it will be tight width wise, they are big suckers.

A sweet swap would be a Lexus 4L 1UZ, and these go real hard with a turbo or two hanging of them. Will handle good too. thers a few Capris running around with these in and I reckon its a good choice.

In then end its up to how hard or easy you want to do it

Depends on what the end use of the car will be. Drag car only - windsor or cleveland, regod street car- windsor is probably the only real ford option. Saw a Capri fitted with a non crossflow 250 years ago and was a damn tight fit length wise. Cleveland takes a bit of fitting but once in is lots of fun and there is more side room around the plugs than in a Falcon

Yeah, I used the CRS kit and the top bolts were damn close to the firewall too, and I pushed the sheetmetal up where the bellhousing thickened, all sweet and no need to cut. Front pulley had to be the single belt option, and I looked around to get the shortest options and thus it all fitted, just I found also that the bulk of the clevo and proximity to the radiator made for cooling problems that took a fair bit of time to sort.

If I had to do it all again I would have gone Windsor, or maybe 1UZ-FE from Toyota. Easier to fit and register if its a street car. If I were building a drag car I would go BBF (514 Crate?) or twin turbo :evil3:

I saw one being built up as a circuit car with a 3L Duratec V6 from an Escape. Not a bad option apart from not being a V8, from memory the guy said they weigh about the same as a 2L Pinto 4cyl as they are all alloy.

Yeah as posted above I'm thinking the Falcon's duratec might be a nice fit.. especially the TwinForce version!

3.5/3.7L Duratec is same external dimensions so it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Main problem with this is no engines available for a while yet!

I have a clevo in my capri and would like to build a 2lt ztec turbo or a cosworth turbo for a more economical daily driver. Even a n/a ztec would be a good start.
Clevo's with alloy heads are only around 5kg heavier than a 302 weezer. Boss motors are ridiculouly heavy! How about a v6 cosworth motor. Check out caprisport for some info on the cosworth v6 and some other engine conversion.

How hard is it to fit a Windsor into a Capri legally?
What's required?
What bolt on brake conversions work best etc?
Is the CRS kit the way to go?
Are there any decent publications that can help you all the way through whats needed for the legalities of it? I have heard that to get one redgo'd in NSW is now impossible. Is it? Waht about engineering?
The Capri I have in the build at the moment is running a 2L Pinto in it, which isn't too bad, but I miss the V8!!!! I even contemplated getting rid of the Capri for a XC/XD if the V8 was going to be too much of a hassle to legally fit.

I certainly hope it's not impossible as I am in the middle of doing this conversion.

I have looked on the NSW code of practice for light vehicle modifications and according to the formula on that you can go up to about 5.3 litre in an 1100 KG Capri (which is what a V6 optioned Capri weighed).

What's in the CRS kit, and what are they worth? Are they bolt in or weld?

The chassis is bolt in and you have to weld the engine mounting towers and support plate to the front cross member.

What they don't tell you is that if you have an earlier MK1 with the extra cross member welded in behind the gearbox you have to cut it out.

They also don't tell you that the engine mount brackets are designed for the four cylinder cross member which means that you are hacking out most of the V6 cross members extra strength if you use them on one of those.

I ended up copying the dimensions of the CRS adapters and re making them so that they fit the V6 cross member without hacking out it's extra strength.
