G'day all. I have been thinking of this for a while now, as it was a contributing factor to my split from my last girlfriend.
Let's say you are in a very happy Relationship/marriage. You love your Girlfriend/Wife unconditionally, and her you. however, you love your beast. your car that is. work on it when you can, love it, etc etc. Your superior other does not, however, love the beast. she can't stand the beast. but hey, she puts up with it. until one day, she says the dreaded words...."its me or the car". now, bear in mind you LOVE her, would give the world for her. she's everything to you. but so is the car! what on earth do you do? It's a rock and a hard place, and this is what i broke up with my last G/F for. I wont be going into the details but lets just say i chose wisely So. what is everyone's thoughts on this? Any variables can be added eg: what type of car, how fanatical you are, etc. If flappist has no problem, let's call this Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. hehe.

If the girl really did love you then she'd appreciate your passion. I say you made the right choice.

Car for me, if she wants to make me choose I would find myself resenting her for it. Not a healthy relationship then is it.

I've never had much luck with the ladies over the years, and from what I've seen of those blokes that are attached and would rather be fishing or whatever, I'm going for the beast without question.....
Not only that, but I think our classics age far better than most women! Ed |

There's the odd inconsistency in there:
1. You love each other unconditionally yet: a) she makes conditions, and b) you love her on the condition that you can keep the car. 2. You would give the world for her, but that doesn't include the car. How much time do you spend in the garage? |

its got to be the beast. Any woman that would give such an ultimatum clearly does not understand the male thought process, and probably would not make a good long term partner. With or without the BEAST, she doesnt seem like the right woman to me. But hey, i am known to be a little different.

Iv been here and copped this, allthough the love was far from unconditional in the end, and we were married.
Good old hindsight dealt me a hard blow on that poor descision. But essentially it did come down to that, and I made my choice. I am VERY happily Divorced with my own home and 2 GT's now instead of the one back then. An only need to work 2 days a week now to keep my current lifestyle, not the 6 days a week I used to have to do to keep us just under our eyeballs with debt.

I didn't read the fine print. You're the guy with the HQ. Good luck with your project. You should read The Alchemist for inspiration. If she's a good g/f she'll wait for you. Check your local book store.

Good responces guys! So far no one has picked the boss I think? I told my at the time that I should be allowed to have both. Why can't I divide my time? I even spent slightly less time with beast than with boss! It was CAR GOES or YOU GO. I packed my S*** that evening and left. How can some people be so narrow minded? They should stick by you if you have a passion. Like I did to her when she made the state team and trained track n field more often than she saw me...

True snappy. But I did all the work at the house we rented at the time. Now I do it at a mates cos I don't have the house haha. Therefore... Yeah problem solved. Let's for argument sakes say the two people live together. No time spent away from home working on cars.

A hypothetical is a totally fictional scenario that may or may not be extrapolated from a current or historical event and is designed to engender discussion on unusual even oblique tangents.
This thread is an attempt by you to validate your personal position and decision in an actual event in your life by engendering peer support not a hypothetical. Last edited by flappist; 25-03-2009 at 11:57 PM. |

I see my vehicle just like a pet. You feed it, you take it for check-ups, you fork out money for it when it's sick and most of all, you love it.
No B***H is gonna make me send my pet to live on a farm. |

Not nessecarily flappist. While it is something that happened to me, it's also something that could potentially happen to anybody. I just wanted to see peoples thoughts on it. I'm not looking for validation or anything like that. Just seeing how other car enthusiasts feel on the subject.

beasts are hard to come by these days, you can find a women anywhere.
If the ultimatem was made to me between the missus and my 67 v8 fairmont, the missus would be out the door tommorow, you did the right thing mate, as 4vman mentioned any relationship with ultimatems like that is doomed. Dont worry mate you will find a missus who loves you and your car, if not there not the right person for you in the first place. the only reason I have my beast is because the last owner was hassled by his missus to get rid of it.she seemed like a real whinging byitch who seemed to dominate things and he was such a nice bloke ,she was no looker ,this bloke was married to her and I felt sorry for him. he'd told me previously that he never wanted to sell it but a few days later sends me an email saying he and his wife had decided to swap it for the boat I had. I,m sure after she had constantly hounded him to get rid of it, good for me I know but I still felt sorry for this bloke who seemed like such a nice guy married to this whinging, hypercondriact .the best thing this bloke could have done was get rid of her. and to think he would give away this car before her was behond me. : |

How can a woman love me for who I am when she wants to strip me of the things I enjoy.

Going of the supplied info only....
Mate if it wasnt the car it would have been something else, people like that dont like their partners to have anything that takes the focus of themselves, they feel threatened.... If it was a relationship where we are genuinely struggling for money to buy our first home, to start a family say, i would sell the car in a heartbeat, i would not need to be asked... But to be told to get rid of it purely because she hates it, sorry... :togo:
