Default Is this Series 1 or 2 Fairmont wagon?

And is it right that the main difference is the brakes?

Thanks!

Series 2 going by the instrument cluster. If its an '01 then its def a series 2. The series 2 had bigger brakes on the front than series 1, rears are the same.

The silver (grey) gear surround is also a series 2 on item.

I think the amber indicators indicate (pardon the pun) that it's a Series 2. They went clear again for Series 3.

Also the alloy looking finish around the gear shifter is Series 2 gear.

Series 2 = bigger brakes, changes to rear bumper bars (sedan model) grilles, paint colours, rear badging, interior trims, dashboard and climate control, Smartlock introduced... quite a big makeover really !!

Did Ford bring that many changes with BA to BF cycle ???

S2 onwards also got the laminated firewall to quiet things down a little more.

Climate control was always stock in Fairmont upwards no matter what series.

A few new paint colours were introduced, such as Congo Green and Meteorite, others such as Sparkling Burgandy carried through.

Smartshield was introduced before S2, about halfway through the S1 model run. Early May 99 IIRC.

A few things they took away - headrests in wagons from S2 on - Oil pressure gauge in XR's etc was supposedly just an on/off affair, not the actual live time unit as per S1.

Many S2 vehicles lost the low coolant sensor in the header tank, but the upper spec models kept them IIRC.

I'm sure there's a stack of other things we've missed.

One thing's for sure though, the AU is an awesome car, no matter which series.

Hard to say - certainly they made more motor and trans changes but not so many detail and interior ones.
But that's most, most definitely a series 2 you've got there, and it doesn't matter so long as it's a series 2 or series 3.

As did the Odometer display. Close up of the cluster gives it away that its a S2. Or at least an S2 cluster.

Also the front grille, the S1 Monty's had the horizontal chrome line through the centre on each side of the badge didn't they? Which was deleted in S2.
