Default Enthusiast?? Hoon??

Very interested to find some answers to the following 2 questions.
It would be nice to put it in poll form, but rather, answer these....
Don't think too hard about it, or take too much time reading everyone elses reponses...just a couple of lines on each, don't need to analyse it too much.

1) What makes "me" a performance/modified car enthusiast?
(Answer)
1
2

2) What makes "him" a hoon?
(Answer)
1
2

1. I obey road laws and don't do burnouts and drift at every opportunity.

2. He has absolute disregard for the law, does burnouts at every set of lights, and doesn't care about the safety of himself or others.

The difference is the attitude towards driving a car. An enthusiast, or at least from what we're told, will respect others and the road rules. The later, the Hoon will disregard these.

1. Car's (motorbikes etc..) is my passion, my hobby and i enjoy working on it, talking about it with others who have the same passion. I also enjoy a nice drive in my car because i like to sit back and enjoy a nice drive through town or somtimes to the local racetrack where i can let lose and unleash my hard work for all its worth. I respect the laws and those that i share the road with.

2. I use my car as i wish where i wish how i wish whenever i want and i dont really care whos around so long as they arent the police. I find it fun to thrash the guts out of my car and im not interested in maintaining my car because its just a car.

....roughly. Number 2 probobly cant be generalised. If its raining and i put the foot down to far or drop the clutch and the wheels temporarily lose traction, i am classed as a hoon...

In QLD if Police catch you doing a hoon offence you get flagged on the system for the rest of your life as a hoon. Not worth it, Im a Police officer and a car enthusiast cant be one in the same with my job.

So, interested to know then, Tyson, from a policing point of view(or actually from a policing point of law), what does make him a hoon?

1. Enthusiasts generally act responsibly and engage in social behavior
that promotes their interest in the wider community.

2. A "Hoon" engages in dangerous antisocial behavior that can results in the
tragic loss of life and disrepute in the community for legitimate enthusiasts.

generally speaking an enthusiast is somebody who works hard and has a very nice car (likely because they havn't crashed it through stupidity, and the car has full comprehensive insurance)

a "hoon" usually has a stock or close to stock car that they believe goes like mad that they drive the wheels off until of course they stack it and due to them having no insurance it then gets strapped with multicolor panels or gets repaired with racetape as they don't have the money to repair it they cant afford insurance so how the heck they gonna repair their car properly?

A hoon is simply someone who partakes in anti social behavior in any car, modified or not.

An enthusiast is someone who has a love of any car, modified or not.

But as for all things, there are exceptions. Regardless of the above, you are a hoon if you have ever owned a Holden Gemini, VL Commodore or Nissan Skyline.

Probably the best definition ive read.

The same person can be 1 or the other depending on how they behave behind the wheel.

You certainly dont need to own a modified car to be either though.

1. Has a high powered car and appreciates it for what it is however obey road rules and will only let it loose on the track.

2. Has a high powered car and thinks its the shiz. Drags every other meathed out there and drifts and does burnouts non stop. Lets it loose wherever he likes.

I don't agree with the comprehensive insurance part. I have 3rd party on both my cars, simply because the premium for full comp on the EA is close to what the car is worth (and the AU's not worth a lot either). The fact is, when I bought the car 8 years ago it was still worth something, but despite being one of the neatest EAs around, it's still worth nothing. It doesn't change the fact it's my pride and joy and I've put a lot of time, effort and money into it.

I own a VL, but I don't consider myself a "hoon", or anyone else who knows me for that matter.

Hell I don't even bother partaking in street light drag racing, because my car would probably get beaten by a Yaris. No point.

Someone said to me recently - I do not speed.
Is that even possible? I mean really possible? To never ever exceed the speed limit?
-------------------------
To answer the question:
1) What makes "me" a performance/modified car enthusiast?
Safety first
2) What makes "him" a hoon?
Safety second

I'm guilty, i know... I replied to Flappists' post, (I posed the question though, so I claim some licence.)
Would like to keep it to the question, guys. There is enough banter back and forth on other threads, and enough agreeing /disagreeing with other peoples opinions.
Just like to see peoples personal opinion on what makes one or the other.
