Default Ford's ultimate torture test for F150/w EcoBoost!

This is a great way to put to rest anyone's concern about whether or not the new EcoBoost 3.5L engine will hold up, and work hard enough, in an F150.

Ford pulled an engine off the end of the assembly line (my wife witnessed this), took it to Michigan and put it on a dyno for 150,000 miles worth of worst case scenario working.

Then they put it in a truck and took it to a logging outfit in Oregon. Logs that were cut down and normally pulled by heavy equipment to where they get loaded on a truck were now going to be pulled (dragged) by the F150 with EcoBoost. There's a reason they don't use pick-up trucks for this.

This truck is also going to go to a race track, a trailer with 2 Ford Fusion race cars on it will be attached, and then they are going to run the truck around the track......for 24 hours.....at wide open throttle.

Somewhere along the line the engine will also compete in the Baja 1000 off road race as well.

Ford just started posting the videos of these events. They look great!!

Awesome videos! It's great to see some pride in the product and decent marketing going on to showcase how great this new engine is.

It's the same engine that goes into the Taurus SHO, but with 5 more HP and 60 more lb. ft. of torque!

If you have ever seen the engine you will notice that the block is built like a racing block with extra meat and ribbing. The main bearing caps are held in place with 6 bolts; 4 straight up through and 2 in from the sides. These are engines like Ford has never designed before.

Looks like Mike found another 'Dirty Job'. The logging clp was impressive, but I noticed they took logs off the top so it was not dragging on the ground for initial take off, and it had to be held fairly flat to the floor once moving. One spot it looked like the truck might have got stuck but they cut it at that point. Still, it should be alright for towing horse floats and car trailers etc.

Still after 150k miles on a dyno, not bad.

If Turbos are so wonderful, why isn’t every car powered by an undersized turbo engine?
From what I have seen, it is very much a case of how you drive them. My Mate bought a Mazda CX7 with the turbo 4. Hauling around that lump of a car, the turbo was constantly working hard, and his fuel consumption was unbelievable. If this new direct injection technology is so good, then just apply to the I6. I’m sure we’d all be happy with better fuel economy.

@Crazy Dazz, like you said it's the DI that makes a difference with turbos. The EcoBoost runs higher compression than a regular NA engine. Traditionally, turbos have had less compression, required premium fuel, suffered from turbo lag and zero low-end torque, and any attempt to make it work on a heavy car made it suck the entire fuel tank in no time. But now things have changed.

Ford isn't the only manufacturer to catch on to this. BMW, Hyundai, GM (it's coming eventually), Porsche.... Ford is the first to put it in a truck application though, and it is proving it didn't just take a 3.5L V6 and give it some add-ons. This engine was built to be a durable truck engine. I think we're going to see a lot more of this. We will be driving the Sonata/i45 Turbo (which is DI) in the near future. And I bet it will be an awesome replacement for my wife's V6 Sonata.

It worked for Ford with the Falcon, and it'll work for Ford today with their ECOBoost engines. If it survives, that's amazing. I wonder how the car its self will hold up?

I would have almost thought the 3.7L V6 would be obsolete compared with that Ecoboost 3.5.

Same for the (detuned?) coyote.

I sounds like a V8 anyway Which is good. Hope that they didn't just add the engine sound in from a V8.

The Miami test has not been edited yet. I don't know if it's been done yet. It's coming though for sure, and two more after that.

Glad you guys like these. I am pretty impressed too. The videos also have a nice look.

Where did it look like the truck might have been getting stuck? What time?

If you check out other videos at Youtube for this truck combo you can find drag times of under 15 seconds in the quarter....for the turbo V6, and under 16 seconds for the NA 3.7L V6.

Great vids, can't wait for Miami.

Mike Rowe is a great choice for narrator in this type of vid.

Very impressive engine. The torture tests sound similar to the ones the ran on Coyote.

I am not completely sure, but I would suspect if that event went down like you said that it was with the Taurus SHO version of the engine which has about 60 less ft. lbs of torque. The EcoBoost V6 has been batted around for about a year or more now, then they upped the power a little for the SHO. However, the F150 version is a different application because it is in a straight configuration instead of transverse like for a front wheel drive. It is a different application than the original intent for the engine and a different program (RWD). I don't know if this version has been compared to your I6 turbo or not.

Ive heard suggestions the Ecoboost V6 wasnt going to be used, but i think there was more of an economical element to keeping the I6 than performance. Both V6's wouldve been up to scratch considering what the competitors have.
