Hey Hey,
I have and AU2 SR, Since converting it manual its been hard to start in the mornings when its dead cold. It started fine on the auto ecu and but as soon as i fitted the manual ecu its been hard to start when cold. The ecu is a AU2/3 HP XR6 item. I have checked the Head temp sensor, Wiring, plugs, ecu connections, cluster and had ford check the sensor when its cold with IDS and its fine. Ive checked everything. Ford is useless and cant tell me anything. Hot/warm starts are perfect. I'm thinking the XR6 ecu is dumping in too much fuel when its cold ?

dumping more fuel when cold helps with spark ;)

aha... now i see..
might it have something to do with the factory XR6 tune that is calibrated for the bigger reg/injectors/fuel pressure?

Tried to get a snap on scan tool to check for codes today and it wont connect to the ECU but it will connect to the BEM fine.

is it possible that something else has started fail at the same time as your conversion??? sometimes the most unlikely things happen coincedently.

Try this when it won't start cold:
1. Turn ignition off 2. Put foot on throttle and hold flat to floor (Keep it pressed until step 4) 3. Turn key to start car. 4. It should fire up within about 3 to 5 seconds. If it does, the foot to the floor thing tells that car that it is in a flooded state and so cuts fuel but continues spark, so if it's flooded, it should start, and once you release the throttle, it meters out the right amount of fuel to continue running. If it doesn't, then it's possibly not getting enough fuel, or your leads/plugs/coil need replacing, or perhaps even your battery and/or alternator. Sorry to be so vague, but non-start on cold but OK start when warm tends to suggest a spark meeting fuel issue, and if it's not fuel, then it must be spark, which could be anything from not enough CCA when cold to get a good spark, through to failed coilpack, or leads, or plugs. Not everything shows up on a scan tool (which makes this kind of thing just that little bit harder to diagnose.

A scan tool wont even talk to it, IDS wont talk to it. If i plug the auto ecu back its perfect. Plugs, leads are new and the coil is fine as i checked that today with a known good unit. My battery is about 5 or 6 years old but it cranks fine and i can have the stereo going at work all day and have no issues with cranking.
I will try pedal idea tomorrow morning and post results. Thanks.

the HP ecu expects to see a different cam and fuel pressure reg thats your best starting point

One more thought - have you checked the inlet manifold bolts? If they are loose, then when cold it may make it hard to start.

Holding the pedal to WOT wont let it start at all, Not even cough or splutter. Manifold bolts are tight and no leaks.
With the xr6 gear fitted ie the FPR and cam, The HP FPR has just a few psi extra fuel pressure but its worth a look. I dont think the cam would make much difference but ill look into it too. Ill get a video of it start tomorrow morning at 5am.

Something just popped into my head. Ford programmed the ECU for me so their IDS must have been talking to the manual ECU then. Why isnt it now

XR6 HP rail and reg was fitted this arvo and it was instantly better. Tomorrow morning will tell with dead cold starts.
Forte rail/reg = 39 psi/2.7 bar XR6 HP rail/reg = 50psi/3.5 bar

It sounds like the ecu is running the engine too lean. If it doesnt start.Unplug the exhaust gas sensor and try again. If it starts well its because the ecu will dump more fuel in without ego connected

correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that the EGO sensor has no impact on cold start / running doesn't it have to heat up before it reads?

XR6 reg fixed everything. Ecu was expecting 50psi at the rail and was only getting 39psi.
