You think gas prices are bad here, Italians are paying $9.50/gal
By Zach Bowman RSS feed Posted Sep 6th 2012 8:28AM Drivers in certain parts of Italy are currently shelling out a staggering $9.50 per gallon of gasoline, according to Bloomberg. The hefty fuel prices are largely the result of the European debt crisis. Italy has hiked fuel taxes in an attempt to get a handle on the country's public debt, which has the dubious honor of being the fourth-highest in the entire world. Of course, the jump in fuel costs has only hurt consumer spending in the country, sending Italy even farther into a recession that continues to damage Fiat earnings. Fuel prices have increased by around 20 percent versus the same time period last year, and that jump has caused new car sales to slacken by 20 percent through the first seven months of 2012. Meanwhile, gasoline and diesel consumption has fallen by around 9.7 percent through June. According to analysts, with gas at these prices the average Italian family is spending more on fuel than it is on food. Ouch. http://www.autoblog.com/2012/09/06/y...aying-9-50-gal

Whilst that's bad, consider, we are paying approx $6.50 a gall here in QLD, ($1.45 Ltr).
Won't take much to get us to the same place really... another 50c a ltr and were there too. |

I'm paying $1.50 per litre for diesel here in Czech Republic. Petrol is about the same, fractionally more. In Germany fuel is slightly higher than this, not much, about $1.60 I think, but I fill up in CZ to save. I find it hard to believe the Italians are paying that much more. Those in northern Italy must be going across the nearest border to save!
The majority of cars here seem to be diesel because diesel is cheaper with slightly better economy. One thing I'll miss hearing in Australia is the constant rattle of diesel engines everywhere. I thought they were supposed to be quiet nowadays! |

The problem I have with fuel prices is that, unlike 'up the creek' countries. We have a strong dollar but still have no buying power? What happens when our dollar drops again? I suspect that's when the poor oil companies will go broke in this country? They're only saving grace will be to raise the prices......
Anyway, why is fuel up this week? Did someone fart near a refinery or something? You just have to remember, price of barrel goes down, our prices go up because we are on the Asian exchange. Oil supply is threatened in the middle east, our prices go up because?....People seem to think all our oil comes out of Iraq.....

In Italy, when we were there a few years ago you had to search for a station that sold "gas" (petrol) and it is a lot dearer than diesel. For a true comparison it'd be interesting to know what they're paying for diesel, 95% or more of cars on the road there use it, even all the Audis, Mercs, BMWs it was a real eye opener.
