A yes those were the days I can still remember going to Calder and sandown to watch Moff and Bob Jane in the Mustang and Camaro and others do battle I was a 14 year old when I started going in the early 70's

The only current driver who can throuw a current car around like that is Lowndes, love watching him slide everywhere hes the only one keeping me interested in the supercars atm

They done some good ol driving back then , certainly no computer says this stuff we have nowadays .....
Watched some footage of gossy,he mentioned running outta brakes and using the corner walls to remove speed,and getting thrown from 1 side of conrod straight to the other at 140-150 MPH due to heatwind, full lock on the grass at them speeds
Best part of the interview, was he won a race in NSW,then his bother ???,drove the car to QLD,no trailer sailer and came 2nd in a heat up there
That to me proves the reliabilty of the cars they built , not the million dollar trailer sailers we have now .....

As for street cars, I've always suspected that cars today can lull the unsuspecting into a false sense of security...traction control, ABS, stability control, bigger tyres, etc.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not some luddite who thinks we should go back to crossplies and no airbags...but people should be reminded that all those things can make a car much safer...but you also have to take a bit of an interest in your driving...learn to feel with the seat of your pants what's going on under you. Feel the small kickbacks through the steering wheel that lets you know what the road is doing...although with some modern cars and electric steering systems, there is less feel. At least the ADR's...despite complaints from some car companies who want to develop steer-by-wire systems...demand that whatever the assistance the steering has, there must remain a physical connection between the steering wheel and the front end.

My 1982 Celica is an entirely different animal on a twisty road to our G6E. There's a range on the way down to Rockhampton which has a couple of k's of nice twisty road...I've been known to turn around and do it a couple of times if there's no traffic around.
On it, the G6E with it's modern power and fat tyres and handling makes a meal of it, but it feels a little "disconnected" from what's going on. Do it at the same speed in my Celica, and you're involved...you can feel every little kickback through the steering, you can feel the flow of the road, the roughness of the bitumen, the push of a bit of yaw in the tighter corners, etc.

When it comes to motorbikes, it's even more so. Many road reviews of big sports and sports/tourer bikes now are eagerly described as "making a good/fast rider out of anyone". Really? Is that honestly something to aim for? My '08 GSX1400 is a sublime sports-tourer...powerful, bags of torque, smooth, comfortable, great in the bends, giving you the confidance to push it harder and harder as you go. But is that a good thing? If I ride my other "superbike" (which it was back in the day), a 1974 Kawasaki H2-750 two-stroke triple, you know you're on a bike that has power and torque, but you also know it has a single stainless steel disc brake on the front and a drum rear. You feel the frame twist as you power out of a corner, you can feel the skinny 36mm diameter forks working hard under brakes (some little kids pocket bikes nowadays have bigger diameter forks...). You are engaged in the experience, and get plenty of warning that you might be pushing a little bit too hard.


Modern cars are easy to drive fast...and that might be the problem. I've been in an XY GT plenty of times (our wedding car was a mates GT), and I've also been in a new FPV GT. If I wanted to go for a spirited drive, I'd take the XY...you could feel everything that was going on. The modern GT was amazing too, don't get me wrong...but it all seemed a little clinical and technological. It was still fun, it was still a great car...but it didn't have that "feel" of an older car and you merely had the feeling of being disconnected as computers said "You sit back, we'll take care of everything".

Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Not sure.

2011G6E you have a widow maker. Sometimes I hop in my GT coupe and just go for a drive. Not to anywhere, just drive and enjoy the road noise, the rumble & the shakes and rattles.

What I'd like to see on one of the digital channels is full reruns of races like this,

I know with cigaret advertising it could never happen but how good would it be say late night inpalce of the absulptre peo 2000 to see old time racers like moffett commentating or giving comments over the top

Aunty used to show these and Tasman races on a show called late night legends a few years back , maybe email them .
