Default Growing Old

Its funny how your life changes and what you want.

When i first bought my falcon 10 years ago, it was all about power, i wanted to chip, tune, mags, lowered, tint and do everything possible to make the car a beast.

However in the last couple of years, i toy with the idea of bolting a turbo on the AU, but i actually just like firing up the car and rumbling down the road for a cruise, not fast, not even accelerating to the point of loosing your lunch.
I want it to sound nice - however to look as original showroom as possible.

Maybe i would think differently if i had the base model and not the XR, i am not sure.

Just a sad day that i dont sit there dreaming of the mod's, just wanting to cruise.

Yep, im with you.
I too remember a time when I would buy another car and stop at the wheel, exhaust, tint etc. etc. shop on the way home.
These days I just want a neat, factory original car to cruise around in.
I don't even care about the badge these days, I've owned enough different brands to know they all have their downfalls.

Every now and then, I go and start up the coupe and rev it. It doesn't go that fast but she sounds beefy. I just love the sound of a V8.

I have never been into getting anywhere in a dead set hurry...Cruising has always been the way for me...Just takin it low and slow..Tis a great feeling!

Cheers
Col

Why would you change the look of an AU XR? You can't improve on perfection!! ;)

I find that a tidy, unmolested, stock car is much more desirable than a car that's been modified to within an inch of it's life. Enjoy it the way the manufacturer intended you to.

Don't worry about being sad, go for a cruise!!

In 10 years I've gone from owing a V8 and being a hard core motorcycle nut owning multiple motorcycles, doing trackdays etc, to not having any care or interest in motorcycles at all and owning a TD Territory and LPG Falcon. But I have a real hankering to own a fast car again...

I noticed quite a change when I turned 50, quite happy to cruise most of the time and have the odd "go" here and there. Happy to let the young fella's push / tune their cars to the absolute limit and feel no need whatsoever to follow suit.

I agree, unmolested cars are much nicer...........unless they have done the work properly, not plastic add ons.

I wanted the bigger rims, but the ford 16's i am happy with as i dont want ride quality comprimised with profiles.

Just a nice stainless exhaust, not too loud, and rumble along.

My 2 year old son loves driving in dads car. Has a die cast model that he is very protective of, very cute. I dont mind the odd squirt, but i like hitting the country roads and going for a blast.

I like the putty road for a sat morning

The modding bug gets worse as I get older

The XR will get a tune to neaten up what the factory gave it and get it running at its optimum with MOST of the factory componentry (a new cooler and pipes, Earls oil line filter, an exhaust at some point are as much as I want to go. I want professional and complete modification, not the backyard hacky stuff of days gone by (chopped springs and the like). And so far, I am succeeding in that quest with the Bilsteins, sound deadener and speakers.

My xr8 had a few mods when I bought it. I got it because it was powerful and I thought it would be a bit of fun. I'm feeling a lot older this year and kind of want it gone, but think it isn't worth selling/trading so I'm just going to keep it for a while longer. If it is worth nothing now it'll still be worth nothing in a couple years when it has closer to 200,000km on it. When I do get something else it'll be a stock 6 cylinder. Only mod I'd do is diff ratio change and towbar - and a tune if it had to have one for the diff. That'd be it - no extractors, exhausts, cats or intakes.

Still love having quick cars ..... have the GT335 now to have a play AND get to drive it everyday! So no .... haven't stopped enjoying these sorts of things .....

BUT ........

The Landau has been retired from drag racing and spending money again on de tuning, removing the NOS, getting the engine back under the bonnet and replace the rear gears to a more cruisy level compared to the 4.33. Did what I set put to do and took many years to get there. A 10 second Landau ....... wanted to say I had the fastest Landau in the world!!!!

NOW ...... it has the tow bar going back on for the reason below. Is this an old person thing???? A 1970 Viscount behind the Landau ...... Can feel a build thread happening

I don't know if it is an old person thing or not, but golly gosh i got one of those ......and its modded !!! the caravan i'm talking about........ (but its white and green ..da fasta one ) !,
i wish i had the the big banger instead ,
i still get a kick out of going fast(well sorta semi fast) and now and again, i give the xr6 a squirt through the bends when a bit of testosterone manages to raise its head in a safe manner, i have no desire to break law on the road, however on occasion borrow the brothers supercharged soarer and give it a run up to the state limit, those youthful days of the doing dumb **** out on the road are long long gone.

I find it pretty cool to go for a cruise interstate, or a road trip with agitator in tow ( the caravan ) and just do a bit of sightseeing, and or pull up and have a barby or even a nap out on the road/rest area, i find these days just de stressing enjoying the countryside or even chewing the fat swapping stories with other dudes out on the road most rewarding, dont do it nearly enough unfortunately.............. maybe that is an old person thing.

The most annoying thing I find about getting old is the young Turks who think wikopedia makes them an expert on everything, and try to “educate” me about things I actually lived through or cars I actually bought.

Tis good to make it this far to actually grow old, but even better to own a vehicle that is still able to surprise the odd young whipper snapper out there.
Hence a sensibly modded Territory Ghia Turbo, the ideal tow vehicle for my club motorsport oriented V8 Capri.
Age shall not weary me... oh well, not too much I guess. Ha ha ha..

I guess I am going the opposite direction to most. For the last 30 years, having kids meant being responsible, keeping the XRs standard but still showing the young ones what was capable. Now, with the kids grown up, the XR and the 635 are both, very capable vehicles and surprise a lot of young folks what a well sorted 6 cylinder can do in experienced hands.

I really love the Ulysses Bike club motto - "grow old disgracefully"

Cheers Vincenzo

Reminds me of a joke of sorts:

There was an OLD bull & a YOUNG bull standing on a hill overlooking a valley full of cows.

The YOUNG bull says "Lets run down there & F*&# one of those cows!"

The OLD bull turns & says "Nah....Lets walk down & F*&# them all!"

I know how you feel! My wife calls me old because I sold my WRX and bought a XR50 non turbo. Whilst I loved the speed, I got sick of something always breaking. So after owning it for 11 years it was time to move on.

I got a non turbo so that I wouldn't modify it. So far so good I just wanted to something that was reasonably quick and would just work when I jumped in it.

But I have been doing some mods to my wife's WRX so I'm not totally "old"

Hallelujah , I am sick to death of talking to twenty and even thirty somethings about touring car racing in the 60's , 70's and 80's .

Must be "A getting old " thing. My last project which I have just finished was restoring a 253 4 speed HZ ute. And all I wanted to do was restore it to back the way it would of come out of the factory. It goes like the clappers but I much rather dawdle round listening to the old V8 Rumble.........
