Default BF mk2 XR6 vs mazda 3 sp23

Hi all

misses wants a new car as i am taking over hers. we have about $10000 to spend. I want some bigger like a falcon as we do alot of highway driving, but she reckons the falcon is too big for her. She would like a mazda 3 sp23. I feel you get better valve for money with the falcon and should provide a better ride in my opinion. What does everyone else think?

cheers brent

It's your wife's car, she is the primary driver. Wouldn't you prefer to let her get the car she is most comfortable with?

SP23 will be fine for the highway.

Why not go have a look at one of each. Jump in them both. You should be able to work out which one she would rather be in.

I know what I'd pick, unfortunately I know what my wife would pick. KM or it being flogged or looked after are less important than colour.

should of added that kids are coming soon too, so that's another factor. I know it will be the wifes car but i do most of the driving. I drive regulary from gladstone to brisbane and the bloodly roads are terrible and not sure how good the mazda 3 will take that punishment. Falcon will take it.

If you live in the bush she might tolerate the bf but in the end they are not nice to drive around town, bit clumsy like a teenager with feet too big for the rest of him.

With kids you or at least she will want something safe with a good esc and a ton of airbags on that note. You can get 09 fiestas for under 10k now, maybe even a econetic but if you've got twins coming that's too small. I wouldn't limit myself to only two models anyway, there are heaps of good second hand cars out there

My wife had a first series SP23, was a good little car at the time and only got rid of it because we moved overseas. Road noise was pretty horrid from what I remember. It liked to be driven too. If you found a good one I'm sure your wife would love it, there's worse things out there to drive. You'd get a reasonable amount of junk in one with a kid, especially with a hatch. I'd still go an XR6 though lol.

my brother's wife had a mazda 3 sedan, soon as the kid came the car was way too small and they got a kluger, fits the shopping, baby seat, pram, and more
check if baby seat hooks eat into boot space too
i'd suggest go the mazda 3 if its a second car, BF if its a primary car
but in reality buy what the wife wants
happy wife = happy life

Get what she feels comfortable in. If she says the Falcon is too big then just get the Mazda.

I got my wife a Focus for her birthday to get he out of her clapped out Mirage. She made it clear that anything bigger and she just won't drive it. She also thinks the Focus is 'too big' and will always take the Mirage over the Focus if I'm not around.

So now I'll just get rid of the Mirage and replace it with something the same size but safer, so she is looked after no matter what.

And yes, as ebv8 says if she is happy, you will be happy ;)

The car is to big argument soon disappears. Once she is used to the size of a Falcon she won't feel safe in anything smaller. My wife thought the Falcons were huge but now doesn't like the feel of smaller cars. Also with our 3 kids... even a Falcon feels small lol.

The mazda will have better resale value. Just traded a 07 BF mkii as the $ fell out of the resale.

As the others have said - buy what the missus wants.
You'll save enough in fuel on the GLT-BNE trip with the Mazda to buy a BA in a year anyway...
Our current model Mazda3 diesel spends it's life doing longer trips (60-70k per year) and loves it.

I think rather than vehicle comparisons, we should be giving advice on the female psyc and marriage harmony...
Rule #1. Never question her opinion.
Rule #2. Never question her opinion.
Rule #3. Never question her opinion.
With this advice in mind, not only will you end up with the perfect vehicle, but you might even get fed (occasionally)

We just sold our SP23 and honestly it was sad to see it go, they are a awesome car for their purpose, the mrs loved it but we outgrew it, and its true that after getting use to the size of the XR6, she probably wont notice its extra size. my mrs went from the SP23 as her daily to a new Jeep Grand Cherokee which is much bigger, now she wouldnt dream of getting back into something of the Mazdas size!
Buy what will suit your needs!!

Being a Ford based Forum, wouldn't a Focus be a better alternative to the Falcon than a "everyone has one" Mazda 3? Focus is good sized car and better packaged than the Mazda 3, the sedan in particular.

We bought an AU when my Wife got her licence, then she decided to downsize to a Camry. Great car ( boring but bulletproof and cheap to run).

As our 2 boys grew, the school runs were becoming a bit cramped so she wanted a larger car again.

So we have..... another AU

It spends more time parked in the garage than on the road, and being on LPG is very cheap to run.

Our boys are 11 and 14 now so they appreciate the space. My Wife on the other hand is under 5' so the large car isn't really a "necessity" for her.

The only thing she complains about with the AU is the colour - silver. The car itself was a great buy so I didn't care about the colour.... and I'm happy because there's no timing belt changes!!

Try an Accord Euro, we were in a similar position a few years ago, I wanted an XR, wife wanted a Mazda 6. The Euro suited us both.

The wife has Mazda 121 bubble. Which will be mine soon enough as a work car. I just want her to drive the cars before she makes her mind up. I just want her to be in a big car as I just feel there safer. May not be true I just feel that way.

If the BF really is in contention, see what she thinks of a Territory. With the virtual pivot front, it turns a lot tighter than a BF, so it's actually a lot better than many smaller cars getting in and out of parking spots. With the high viewpoint she sees over most other cars. With the seats at height, getting little ones in and out of the rear seat are not back breaking. With the Stability control standard and airbags it is safe as houses. And it is a consummate highway cruiser.

Converted to Liquid LPG and it costs as much to run as an SP23 with no loss of power or any of the stability/traction features.

Food for thought.
