Hey guys,
I'm looking to put a type 9 five speed behind my 2.0L escy. I've done all the research on installation/price etc. however my main query is about the effect on higher speeds. I'm not trying to chase performance goals, I purely want to be able to get on the freeway and cruise comfortably over 100kph... Is this something the 5 speed delivers? Just looking for personal opinion and experience really as I don't know anyone with a 5 speed on a 2.0l that i can test for myself. Thanks in advance, Tim

Given the fifth gear is an overdrive ratio, you will get some benefit.
Dirt common conversion for Esky people, and simple IIRC about others in the club who have done this (I'm not an Escort owner....yet). According to Burton's in the UK, these are the standard Type 9 ratios... Gear ratios: 3.65/1.97/1.37/1:1/0.82. So doing the maths, at 100km/h you should see a 21% reduction in revs over 4th gear. In my Capri V6, that would be 3500rpm@100km/h down to 2870rpm.....I wish.... Hopefully the real world figures translate similarly. Even a 500rpm drop would be nice. Or ....if you take the idle speed away first (-650) , do 0.82 maths, then add back, you get 2987rpm in 5th (i.e. hey presto, 500rpm drop !!) Or are you asking if a standard 2lt Pinto struggles with a 0.82 5th gear @100kmh? i.e. off torque/power bands |

1.6lt with 3.77 diff= 3700rpm @ 100kmh Yup, seems higher end of revs. Do some maths on your own diff ratio. |

I have done the conversion on my rs2000 I left the original diff 3.54 in however due to cam and carbys its to tall to hold 5 th under 100. ( 110 k just on 3000rpm) I have now changed it to a 3.9 this improved the drivability, the combination would work with a std engine

And don't forget if playing with diff ratios that it will upset your speedo readings, but you should be able to get the right speedo drive gears from various specialist parts businesses.

good luck. I have the 5 speed in my RS2000 as well and find it great on longer runs. I have no issues with it at speeds below 100 kmh. I have a cam and a couple of big carbies and it drives like a dream.
