Default I Messed Up Bad! Help Please!

I was removing the bonnet rock protector sticky film from the front of my hood and all was going well until about half way, when I heard a troubling tearing noise. Long story short I've managed to rip off the top layer of paint (the colour layer) and have exposed it down to the black (primer?) layer beneath. I've just re stuck the section that peeled off the paint and left it as is.

I have two questions. One, what the hell do I do now? If I leave it as is, will rust form quickly? In which case I need to paint over my **** up very soon.

Secondly, can I fix my **** up using the spray cans you get from supercheap/repco and masking tape etc. In which case, any advice?

That's proper respray time, and very poor paint preparation.

Feel sorry for your pain , but unfortunately, no other option but re-spray if pride and joy - if not - then Super Cheap is your friend.

Will there be a rust issue if I don't get it repainted immediately? Or is it alright if I wait a while.

I'm honestly so gutted right now...

You should be able to leave it for about a month or so before rust will start to appear.

But ye only way to fix it properly is to get whole bonnet re sprayed.

Sorry!

This is what I feared. I may just end up chucking on some supercheap paint for the timebeing and leaving it as is.

Don't stress mate, it's just a re-spray. I'd be worried if the primer came away too, but you're right for now.

Have a look through this thread. The OP does some nice work repainting with cans. Maybe send him a PM?

Or just some touchup paint will do until you can do or get a better job done.

If you go to an auto paint supplier they should be able to mix your colour and put it in a spray can.

Touch up paint till you can get (or afford) a respray.

My little brother dropped a queen spring mattress on the rear bar of my phoon last year scratching down the undercoat (obviously nowhere near as bad as you as the bumper is plastic so no rust), it sucks, touch up will hide it to most everyone else, but to me... I just need it resprayed. Then I'll be happy about the rear end again.

Autobarn or Supercheap can mix up a large can of proper colour-coded paint to suit the original Ford colour. As a cheaper option to a full bonnet re-spray, I would suggest that you prep the leading edge of the bonnet, mask an even strip full width along the front, then prime and paint it with a neat line to the original paint. Finish with new protector film sized to match or a perspex bonnet guard in clear or dark.

I'll definitely chuck a photo of it up for you guys tomorrow. I'll be spending this weekend trying to patch it up cheaply with touch up as best I can, and will take photos of this for you all too.

If the finished product isn't good, I'll probably chuck another protective film or whatever ontop of it to hide the discolouration. At the end of the year when I have enough money I'll look into either getting its repsrayed or picking up a replacement bonnet.

Is the car new or fairly new - under warranty?
Was the protector film put on by the dealer or an aftermarket automotive supplier for the dealer?
The answer to these questions will determine the outcome.

option 3 go to wreckers and by a bonnet in same colour .
If colour doesn't quite match original the put in shed and respray when you can.

Or just drive it around with my DIY job until I can afford a respray lol. I'll look into a wrecker bonnet later on. However, a wrecker bonnet and respraying the bonnet come to fairly similar prices.

Car is 11 years old and most definitely not under warranty. No idea who chucked the film on as it was on before I got the car, and the only reason I removed it was because the film was looking extremely bad.

Ok then.
Someone suggested a 2nd hand bonnet in the same colour if they're the right price.
Otherwise, just get a touch up pen and go over the edge where the film ends to seal that up and get it resprayed when you can afford it.

Should have used a heat gun / hair dryer (very carefully) to get craaap off.

Next time....you live and learn.

Bet it had no chips and was pristine because of that nice protective film....

SORRY....that comment was meant tongue in cheek humour, not that you are laughing.

No worries mate, it's been a couple hours now so I can start to see the humour in the situation

I'm going to use some of the aerosol can stuff and give it as best a respray as I can. Wish me luck!
