Default NSW Police new toy.... BMW i8

Great new toy, but don't know where they will fit the criminal's

NEW South Wales Police is at it again, securing yet more exotica to win hearts and minds - and maybe even keep up with you speeding supercar drivers.

The Rose Bay Police Squad has welcomed a BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car to its fleet, the 266kW/570Nm petrol/electric extrovert able to hit 100kmh in 4.4 seconds, all the while capable of supping just 2.1L/100km of fuel.

The $300,000 i8 is on loan from BMW Sydney, all at no cost to the tax payer. It will see service as a "community engagement tool at police events to showcase the role police play in the community," said Rose Bay Police Superintendent Bradley Hodder.

Still not troubling you wannabe speedsters? Well, you're hardly safe in the Lake Illawarra Local Area Command region of the NSW Police either, as they've just bagged a $180,000 Audi S7 Sportback for the next 12 months.

Famous for punting around in an Audi RS4 Avant previously, the lucky officers' new S7 may not be quite as rapid as the Avant, but with its 4.0 twin-turbo V8 producing 331kW and 550Nm it can still reach 100kmh in 4.6 seconds.

"We are pleased to continue to support the NSW Police Force as they engage with the youth and wider community in the Lake Illawarra region," said Andrew Doyle, Managing Director of Audi Australia.

The rapid Audi will be used for community and youth engagement activities, with a fair argument being that a community that is engaged with Police better understands what the force does and why.

And really, they're a tad more enjoyable to cruise around in than a Camry.
