Default How do you get a 23yr old 300,000km car more reliable even though they might be doing good?

Hi

how do people get a 23 year old car with over 300000km a more reliable even though they might not be doing too bad when they might not want to sell,

when heaps have already been done and been fixed when they need some suspension work and maybe oneday head gasket or better a low km engine amd a few other little bits to finish them off just intrested to know

And for the people that change cars while there's still value just intrested to know what's the mileage where they loose too much value or start to have a heap of minor problems that cost $100 here $300 there until it adds up to a grand that might make people trade up

When you are spending as much per month on keeping a POS on the road, as a new one would cost in repayments.

well I keep my 1991 Vitara on the road and yes it has issues.
i would say i spend $600 per year on parts to keep it running,
sounds like a lot but if i bought a new small car on finance i would be paying back min. $350 per month so $4200 per year just to pay it off and break even after depreciation (based on my old 2012 Fiesta CL)

do you want to spend your money on parts or spent it on depreciation?

For newer cars, 100,000 kms seems to be a hurdle so people replace their cars before then.

Running close to end of warranty is another reason due to cost of replacement of major parts.

Install a Barra Turbo motor into said vehicle. Voila, fast and reliable (insert model of car here).

Very general question...

Some replace every year, because they can afford it.

Some replace as soon as warranty runs out...

Some replace at the 100,000kms

Some replace at the end of a lease.

Some drive them into the ground..

You replace when ever you want / can afford.

Some replace when they get bored, that's me. Right now I'm starting to get bored. Carsales.com.au appears in my history more often now than it did a year ago.

When you got a car that's while is good but currently stops you from going to some places until some problems are fixed would that be why other people change cars every so often so they always got a good one to be able to go places

How does the car actually stop you from going places?

Does it talk to you and tell you not to go? Lock you in your room? Tell you its leaving you if you go somewhere? Or is the battery flat or something? No petrol in the tank?

Not sure I understand. A car is for going somewhere, not to stop you from going somewhere.

If your car is stopping you from going somewhere, its not a car, its an anchor.

A 23yo car with possible future head gasket issues you say, I'm guessing its an EF Falcon.
Don't bother replacing the gasket, fit a low km engine from an AU, they are bullet proof and fit straight in with a few minor mods.
Unfortunately the money you spend on an older car of its vintage is dead money as you'll never get it back, just drive it into the ground and get something newer.
$60 a week will see you into a car worth $10k over 5 years if you can get finance.
I have a mate who never buys a car worth more than $1k, drives it until it dies and buys another. He hates dead money and refuses to pay interest to a bank etc.

Back in the day 200,000ks was the point of no return for many but with a lot of modern rubbish you would drop them like a hot potato once the warranty is up @ around 100,000ks, as they can be expensive to fix.
People have a lot more spare money these days so changing cars because they can has taken precedence of upgrading due to necessity.

If is a half decent model of car there is zero issue keeping it running. My old bus has 330000 km in it and sees a lot of daily usage. Do the work yourself, pick up spares when you see them cheap and get your hands dirty occasionally. That era car is still possible for the home mechanic to handle almost all jobs. The last big money I spent on mine was a spare $150 engine that I freshened up with rings bearings and head service and a trans rebuild, owed me about $2000 all up from memory and that was 60000 km ago and I don't envisage any major maintenance costs coming up for a long time. If your prepared to work on your own car they are pretty cheap to run,f you don't want to dirty your hands or aren't interested then pay $85 and hour for a mechanic to do everything and good luck, you'll get poor fast.

Oops, wrong thread. Same OP.....

Simple - if you can fix it yourself, or have a decent mechanic, keep it as long as you want (and as long as you can get parts).

If you can afford a newer car, then consider the upgrade.

If you can't afford it, then find a balance in between.

Some people are happy to spend $40K on a car every few years. Others won't spend over $10K on a good 2nd hand car, and either drive it into the ground, or replace it after a few years with another $10K car.

It all comes down to personal circumstances, and everyone is different.

Perhaps you should consider a job surveying the 100 respondents for the Family Feud questions?

I reckon you're just wasting money changing cars every 3 yrs or when lease runs out. If the car is still serving you well consider your options. After 10 yrs or 200,000km the trade in value is negligible. If the car still suits your purpose then run it to the ground. If your family circumstances suggest you might be better with a different type of car then change. I've only had 5 family cars in 45 yrs of driving and have only changed cars due to changing family needs. No brand allegiance only choosing the most suitable car and have had Ford, Nissan, Chrysler and now VW.

Buy a good car to start with and keep it well maintained , as long as you maintain it properly , there's no reason why it cant be super reliable regardless of how many years old it is .
