Default Sydney drivers spending $8,000 per year on road tolls.

Saw this on news this morning and just found it online.

At least in Melbourne the Western Ring Road is toll free but the East link can get pretty expensive on the Sth Eastern side but it is a nice big road that does save time and usually flows pretty well.

NSW wants a AAA international credit rating to get reelected. (both sides). the only way to do it is use contractors for taxation. See what the mayor at blacktown said today, only for the numbers, not the politics.

You left out the *some* and *up to*, and I'm guessing that $8k figure doesnt factor in what gets refunded to private motorists using the M5

Even when I was doing courier work ... I was not spending that much on tolls .... and sometimes I did have to use them to get places quicker for some jobs.

Once M4 Toll comes back onboard .... I can see a lot of people will be avoiding it as much as they can.

Not looking forward to the longer queues at Cumberland Highway in the mornings once toll comes into effect (as that's the last exit without a toll on it heading into the city.)

I'll have to get off the M4 earlier and just run Gt Western Highway a bit longer.

I spend $4700 a year on Citylink that's just to and from work. No weekend travel included.

I rack up close to 600 a month on the etag in sydney. It's a work car though so I don't pay the tolls, but it's still a tad obscene considering it's all between jobs and not to or from work. I took the m2 3 times today and also 3 times through the lane cove tunnel. I started in the city, went to maquarie park, back to the city, then finished in maquarie park again.

I have always been against private toll road operators. Public infrastructure should be in public hands. Transurban was apparently created because the Victorian government did not have the funds to build Citylink. This toll road became so profitable that Transurban has grown to now own and operate 15 toll roads. All those tolls which made the Transurban consortium wealthy could have gone into state coffers to fund roads, schools, hospitals etc. I had no problem pay tolls to use the West Gate bridge as that money went into the public purse but I avoid Citylink like the plague.

That number is a lot of CRAP!!!! $8,000 / 365 days = $21.91 per day (including weekends)... There would be a very very very small percentage spending this much..

No tolls here. Registration is about $50 per year, petrol is about 60cpl, no cameras, and freeway speed limit at 130km/h. But Perth does have nice beaches.

I remember when you would chuck $2 into the machine at a toll point. Now (here in QLD at least) they have myriad administrative fees and charges just to be able to set up and maintain an electronic toll pass, on top of the $5 they ding you every time you drive on a toll road.

https://www.govia.com.au/web/ssp/fees

I love the "avoid tolls" button on my GPS, beats ****ing thousands of dollars a year up the wall on tolls

At least in Melbourne AFAIK the tolls are capped at $15 a day for use of the whole Eastlink, Citylink and Tullamarine Freeway into city as many times as you like from memory.

Sydney seems to be a totally different system which must be hard for couriers, taxi's and trucks trying to cut travel times down?

If these roads are working properly theres less stop/start if theres no accidents which is alot easier on your brakes and fuel.

Lived in Syd for a while and bought a car. Turned up to do the registration and saw the price.. $1400. Decided no way in hell will I pay that and bought a $50 unreg permit instead and drove it to Victoria and paid half that.

Sydney's road system is called a carpark.

When doing courier work ... you learn all the main backways VERY quickly. Even they can take time to get through as well. Sometimes Tolls are unavoidable if having to traverse the metro area on an Express job ... but the job more than pays for it as well.

I avoid them too when using my ute as they charge commercial rates even though it is privately registered and used for non commercial activities. Screw them.

Really? Try living in the NW with no workable public transport to/from the airport for work. That number is anything but crap for many.

$30+ (it keeps going up) when I am forced to use them each working day. Rat runs are available but the best one is about to be tolled again. Staggered start/finish times help but some times you've just got to suck it up and pay the toll or spend 4+ hours a day in your car to/from work or put up with four change of trains and pay the extra for the airport line charge - you may as well just pay the tolls!

$8K is conservative for many if you factor one family account and multiple e-tags. Good luck to those in the SW who get their M5 refunded. What I would really like to see is a level playing field on the Northern Beaches link.... I wont hold my breath!

You guys bang on about how much you pay on tolls ff's???
Try driving a truck!......whatever you spend on an individual toll....for a truck over 2.8mtrs in height.....triple it!
I've only got a Hino tilt tray and right now it's costing me anywhere from 200-400 bucks a week in bloody tolls!.....
Once the M4 tolls come.....I'll be spending almost as much in tolls as I do in diesel fuel....

The difference of course is that you can claim legit business expenses, so effectively you get it back. If you're not you need a better accountant... 🤓

Only 10-11% you will get back from this ... so not really that much at all.
