ok guys... searched for some info.. but got JACK as per usual!
there really needs to be an alphabetical searching option, like "L" for lights, locks & hot and steamy Lesbo action.... oh.... nah, you get my drift?? i am after some help, JEFF from this forum was emailing me.. but i cant get any emails back to him.. i dont know what his username is so yeah... i want my fog lights to come on when my park lights are on, also when i swith to full lights they will still be on. other idea i had was to have a SWITCH on the fuse box cover or something similar. Also what would you guys think of RE-WIRING my HORN. My horn pad has some serious problems with coming on in the middle of the night, stays on after you push it etc etc.... and i really dont feel like getting ripped off by ford for a new backing on the horn. would it be possible to wire up another push button somewhere on the box or something like that? my neck is getting sore from sticking my head out the window and abusing people all the time! Any help would be sweet! Rob |

Two Jeffs I know of - T3Man or XACoupe. I'm guessing it was T3man though.
As for witing the lights, you need a switch inside the car and you should use a relay (but don't have to). Simplest wiring is to tap into parker circuit, run a wire to a switch in the car, then run a wire to driving lights. That way, when your parker are on and the switch is on, the driving lights will be on. When you go to full beam, the lights will still be on as the parker stay on too. With a relay setup - I'll get back to you.

Relay setup goes like this:
Parking light circuit to switch. Switch to relay (pin 86) Relay to Battery (Pin 30) Relay to earth (Pin 85) Relay to driving lights (Pin 87)

thanks JC. not exactly 100% confident on trying this my self, need to get a mate to help i think!
Can you just grab the wiring loom from the headlights and "piggyback" a couple of wires down to the foglights? i am sure you could yeah? any suggestions for the horn idea though? thanks mate Rob |

Rob - yes you "can", but it's not legal. Not worth getting defected for the sake of $30 worth of wire and a relay, and a bit of time to fit.
As for the horn, I would remove the airbag and fix the problem. Just disconnect the battery first. And you will need a 6 sided torx bit to undo the screws that hold the airbag cover in. You could rewire the horn to a momentary/starter button (ie only works when you press it) on the dash, but you would still need to get in behind the airbag to find which wires work the horn anyway.

You shouldn't try and piggyback the foglights to run of the headlight wiring - apart from poor performance due to voltage drop, you risk overloading the headlight wiring loom and melting something (or at least blowing a fuse) - the headlight wiring from factory is minimal as it is for it's purpose. For safety's sake always run a fuse for your foglights (in the wire from relay to bat+) and make sure the wiring/relay you run is rated greater than the fuse.
Is it an AU? If so, then for removing the airbag module it's actually a size 30 security torx plus bit (5 splined bit with a hole in the end). Well I know this is true at least fot AU2/3 anyway. Steve. |

Steve - you are right. It is the 5 sided, not 6 sided, torx bit.
If you run the lights off a relay, then power actually comes straight from the battery - you only plug into the light circuit (via a switch) to trip the relay to the on position. And yes, a fuse is always a good move.

Ahh, no probs - I was thinking he may have meant just running the wires from the foglight globes straight to the headlight globe wiring and run both lights parallel of the same connector so to speak.

ok i wont piggy back the lights from the loom, i will make up a whole new thing with a switch in the car.
can someone please explain EXACTLY what i need? and maybe a bit of a drawing explaining how you need to wire it up. i havent done any electrical stuff before, but it shouldnt be too hard with some directions! the horn thing... can i use the same sort of set up as the fog lights for the horn? I dont want to play around with the airbag, and i dont want to spend huge $$ at ford getting it fixed! thanks fellas Rob rob |

Just a small bit of advice before you go to the trouble. It is illegal to drive with you fog lights on. NSW its a $70.00 fine...down here I am not sure but its is illegal and if they are having a bad hair day the buggers will do you. Same with driving with park lights hence the name park lights...thats when you use them, when you are parked on the road side. Yes I have been pulled up at an RBT and thats what was told to me. Any way...just thought I would mention it after all, the less reasons they have to stop you aye.

What you will need:
Some 15Amp (minimum) wire - approx 6m should do. A 15Amp (20 or 30Amp is better) relay A switch (Illuminated or standard toggle) some female spade connectors (approx 12) Crimpers or pliers. Optional - heat shrink tubing, circuit tester Diagram attached as well - modified from the one Evil Chief posted in another thread (thanks Evil Chief).

thanks so much mate!
i appreciate it! so that is the set up i would use to have a switch in the cabin yeah? that seems pretty simple to me! do you think you could use the same set up for the horn. as in: have another wiring set up like that but instead of the lights... you go to the horn? thanks again mate! Rob |

Yep - that's how you connect air horns, so I guess you could re-route a normal horn the same way.

Having said that, it is only these two torx screws that I know of that require the 5 sided bit (but a notched screwdriver works just as well!). Every other torx screw/bolt is the 6 sided variety.

Just to quickly clear up a point regarding the few posts on the 5/6 sided torx bits 'cause I've seen similar posts before too:
5-sided torx is not a Ford-only thing - the 5 sided bits are just a 'new improved' version of the original 6-sided torx. It is an industry standard and they are called TORX PLUS as oposed to 6-sided ones which are just called TORX. Both also come in a security version which has a hole in the end of the bit. Both come in common range of sizes. The fact you don't see Torx Plus used on many things is no accident - it was developed as a new high-security standard when Torx started to become popular for general use and was always intended as more of a limited use for security or critical fastener applications etc. sfr_rob - bugger about the paint work. Just to note again on those lights - in that diagram, a fuse would go inline on the wire running between relay and battery positive. I only say this again 'cause I know of people who have wired up things without fuse protection and have been unfortunate enough to regret it (think: flames :/ ) - it can happen. Steve. |
