Default Cam and Exhaust: Which first?

Just wondering if there is any point in doing my cam before I do the exhaust?

Eventually I will get around to both, but I want one of these done before the Geelong Dyno Day; I have to have some kind of engine mod.:

I wanted to do the cam first, but will having the stock exhuast system hamper it? So therefore there is not much point.

And if the cam is the go, what type should I get for the EL, remembering that it has the XR6 cam now. How many people get good results with wades? I want the idle to remain normal aswell. :nutsycuck

If the exhaust is better off going on first, I think Ill just play it safe and get some pacy and redback combo as they seem to do the job.

I would say that the exhaust would be best to do first. As the cam will only work to its best potential when combined with an exhaust, intake and other mods...

Whats stopping you from doing both?? A cam regrind and shims aren't expensive, and if you are tight for money, do the cam + a cat-back system... that way you can have both, and get the pacy's later on

I might get there, or I mightn't, well see. I just moved house and Im at uni so untill holidays Im only working weekends.

I was under the impression that a cat back did sqwat all, and compliments the headers.

spot on, i went cam before exhaust and couldnt tell the difference, when i got the exhaust i noticed it alot more, that wit the cam

exhaust first is what i say

I had a cat back on my old fairlane, and having it sitting there next to the standard, there was a huge difference. The bends were mandrel bent, so they weren't crushed like the standard, plus the mufflers are a lot less restrictive.

The car was marganily quicker with the cat back, but the biggest difference was the way the car reved under load... so much more responsive.

Do exhaust including headers first.

I got my exhaust first, noticed a slight difference, got a cam after that (no extractors still) and noticed a fairly big difference and the exhaust note changed alot too. If I was to do it again i'd do the same thing.

i was thinking of getting a cam too but i only have a 2.5" cat back exhaust. so by what iv read will it be ok to put a bigger cam in. also if i do that do i need any computer extras or valves or anything like that, or can i just put the actual cam in and thats it??

Depends on what cam you get, my wade 1004 was fine without any computer mods, you can just put the cam in (with shims if it's a regrind). Most off the shelf cams won't need computer mods so you should be right.

does this mean the wade 1636 is best?
how much would it cost - "$120 change over"?

No you dont need any headwork for the milder cams, and no one said the 1636 is the best... it is just a good mild cam suited for street driving.

A grind (If you are a fordmods member) costs around $120, they charge about $100 for a set of shims (You can get them from ford for way less apparently)
Then as an option you have have a vernier gear so you can dial the cam in.

I think we need a sticky explaining cam choices and installation lol :P

Extractors ain't an engine mod polyal. It's an exhaust mod.

Do whatever you like first. Best bet is to free up the exhaust first though.
