can any please let me know how to turn off the pesky service indicator light on my au fairmont.

It's in the service manual, but goes something like hold in the odometer reset button and keep it held, then turn on ignition and keep that button pressed for around 10 seconds.

thats right. while holding ur speedo button located in the center of the dash, turn the ignition to "on" ie past accessories, but not cranking. continue to thold the button until the light goes out with a slight beep. usually takes 10 to 15 seconds

Watch out if you have an early AU, 98 build. Sometimes with these you have to release the odo button at the right time, rather than just hold it in and wait for the beep. 13 to 14 seconds usually.

in both my AU's i have never had the service light come on, what triggers it ?
