Its not a matter of gearbox, i think its all electronic that makes the ESS work. JC was talking about someone developing a kit for this to suit non T series.

JC is pretty interested in this project. I remember a post not so long ago, that someone is getting pretty close to getting it to work.
Someone with an XR6 box though. I don't think it can be done with the standard box, but hey, I'll stand corrected if I'm wrong. JC will post here soon enough! LOL! GK

Is this soon enough?
It can be done - a TE/TS50 auto box would be a great start, as it will have the valve/solenoid that is capable of electronically holding first gear. Normal & XR boxes don't have this, so it will not hold first, and just ends up findig a box full of neutrals somewhere between 50 & 60 km/h. The electronic side of it is effectively a few resistors etc that wire into the ECU. A bloke in Melbourne by the name of Murray has developed the electronics to work with the BA SSS shifter in E series and AU cars, and is the man doing the electronics for the ESS shifter for the AU standard box. Last time I emailed him, he was changing the program (EPROM?) to only use ESS foir 2-3-4 as first won't hold electronically in the AU (it will by shifting the gear shifter to 1 though). The ESS electronics etc were expected soon, but then I've been waiting over 18 months for this, and will continue to wait until it's ready to go. Oh, BTW, the major issue is getting the signal from the steering wheel buttons, through the clock spring - there are only a certain number of wires in the clock spring, and the ones that are there are used for radio, cruise and horn, so you have to lose one of these, or send an RF signal along one or more to get the buttons to work - my understanding is that this is the current hold-up, as the shifts were not happening quickly enough due to electronic "noise"/interference.

just a thought instead of using the steering wheel controls why not use a BA shifter to do the work would be much better to drive that way

JC tried that as well ... getting it to fit as a different issue (shape does suit AU interior from the boxy B-series)
Just connect NOS (NAAAWWWWZZZZZ) up to the ESS buttons :hihi: (That's a joke everyone)
