Hi everyone,
I am thinking about buying a ford capri XR2 turbo but the thing is i have never drivin one and dont know stuff all about them if anyone out there has had one or knows how well they goe any info would be a great start thanx very much for ya time, JOE :

They are a disgrace to the name capri and don't hold a candle to the mk1, 2 or 3 capri probably not what you wanted to hear but thats the way it goes.

Not all of them are, the last model XR2 Clubsprints seem to be kept in top nick.
With modifications, anything you can do to a FWD KC/E laser should go with the Capri. |

Get a 94 model. Had one in cobalt blue and it was a hell of a lot of fun. They are good value especially when you consider how little they cost, and the engine is from Mazda anyway so it is built rather tough. I never had a cooling system problem but I suppose you'd just want to maintain your cooling system regularly ie every 20000klm and you should have no trouble. If you do get one, watch the condition of the roof and the rubbers that seal it up. I have seen them in California and apparently they were quite popular there. Good Luck with it.

For the love of god keep the MK1 and forget about the later ones they are not worth the minute amount of metal they are made out of, if you want some go wack some alloy heads on the MK1 triple weber 45dcoe's and you can see around about 300hp. I sold my '70 GT3000 about 6 months ago and have regretted it ever since with the money i have spent on the new car i could have easily had 300hp out of it as it was already lingering around the 250hp mark.

Well the press killed them when they were new, and the lemon tag sstays put.
It is a pity that they were not seen for what they were the cheapest convertable on the market, from hair dresser models to hair raising. A bucket of fun and cheap as chips. Got news for the knockers, most convertables leak, easy fixed don't drive it in the rain. They also improve greatly with a little weight loss, pull the roof out, hard and soft top, strip the interior, remove the bits and pieces that don't do anything, trim wipers, sunvisors, you wil have to get custom super low springs as the laser ones are still way to high, when it is empty, and you will have the most fun / reliable, convertable car in the world. At current prices they are a steal, not half as rusty as the english capri's that only went if you spent money on them or droped a little eight in it. Go the little aussie battler.

I should have mentioned there is an annual muster of the capri's as well.
Even a Yahoo chatroom. Mine had done over 200,800 Km and still goes well. Pic of it all back together minus the hard top

They are built on the Laser floorpan and are virtually mechanically identical. Good little reliable car if maintained well. Just dont expect it to stay 100% dry inside when it rains.
I was a 4th year apprentice at a Ford dealer when they first came out and spent many hours trying to fix water leaks on these. Ford bought out all sorts of different rubber seals and roof upgrades to try and overcome this, but never really solved the problem entirely. At the end of the day, its a convertible, expect water leaks. If they concern you too much, get a hardtop to clip on for winter. |

The later Capri's I think are awesome little things, though they have more in common with Lasers then their older brothers.

Australian Capri, great car
Ignore what the british capri lovers say, they have nothing to do with the thread. The two cars share the same name, that is all. Again great car, the later model the better. The XR2's are a one of the later ones, so your of to a good start. As noted the roofs are bad, (but got better), they suffered from late eighties build quality, and are basicaly a laser underneath. There were plenty of turbos made for a little more zip. Body kits were available although I don't know about now. Better still would be a clubsprint that comes with great seats, body kit, 16" mags and sometimes a turbo. As with lasers make sure it is serviced regularly. As a fun car, there aren't many better Chrispy |

Give them a break.....The convertibles were exactly what they were meant to be - a cheap, reliable rag-top built for American export. They were never as bad as the press made out and the faults were quickly sorted. Essentially they were a Ford Laser with the roof cut off.
.....Having said that, park one next to a Mk 1 GT V6 with that rumbling Essex and sure its going to look a bit effeminate. Hopefully Ford will build that turbo charged V6 prototype that surfaced a few years ago and we will have a modern Capri worthy of blowing away those jerry-built Minis.....just like the Mk 1s did in the late 60's. |

Now I don't know much about Mk1's, but one of these Capri's came out with a B6T engine which isn't too difficult to get 200kW out of - The later clubsprint carrying the BPT which is even easier - Not slow.
