as stated above i always followed the +2" rim diameter. which suggests that with a 2' larger rim the tyre is 2" smaller while looking at side wall, the overall size of the wheel hasnt changed, thus legal and not impeding any laws or regulations. i have recently been told that since alot of new cars are released with large rims, hsv/fpv stock 19s and 4wd's with 20" they scrapped that rule. as long as the wheel pass the load ratings they are legal. i enquired this with aami insurance, and within the last month or so they have been putting rims down as accessories rather than a modification.
my 2c Dan

Have done that just now but they have said that those rules must be out of date cos there are new rules now.. I even rang VICroads and spoke to there guy in the roadworthy section and he is getting in touch with the RWC station as we speak.. According to him the +-15mm overall diametre is still the law..
Cheers, Nik

Shows how much the RWC testers actually know.
The only reason I went searching for these is a disagreement with what a RWC tester told me once. |

To answer the original question, I have 19"s on my car now, with stock XR ride height, and no problems at all.
With regards to regulations this only applies for WA. I don't know of the legalities in other states. You are allowed to go 2" bigger in diameter than stock, and 1" wider. However, if the rim is 7" in width or larger, you can't upsize width at all. Get an EL GT tyre placard and put it on your car, and most cops won't know the difference. Only problem there is that you can then get done for running less than 8.5" width.
